Description My third tattoo, taken the day it was completed (August 30, 2007). The slight shine in the photo couldn't be avoided, as new tattoos must be moisturized with rather thick ointment that reflects light like nobody's business.

To me, tattoos are at their most beautiful when they've just been completed, so I chronicle each of mine when they're still fresh. The obvious physical evidence of pain serves as a reminder of the devotion and commitment involved with each and every tattoo.

The design is traditional Polynesian, drawn and beautifully executed in the Tongan style by King Afa at Zulu tattoo in Los Angeles.

Polynesians believe that, when a person dies, only two elements of their being continue on into the afterlife: their soul and their tattoos. Tattooing is thus a deeply personal, spiritual act, and one develops a very close bond with the tattoo artist.

With the advent of Christianity in the South Pacific, the traditional Tongan style of tattooing was nearly wiped out. Thankfully, in recent years, a small group of deeply dedicated tattoo artists have been studying and reviving the style.

I grew up in Southeast Alaska, a child of forest and wind and water. When I met Afa, I was searching for a tattoo that would embody all three, so I could keep my home and the ocean close to me wherever I went.
The results are more than I could have hoped for, and I now have a beautiful partner through this life and the next.

Every piece of this tattoo has different symbolism - if you have questions, feel free to ask.

Interesting story, it's good to know where art comes from. I've drawn up a couple of tattoos for my partner, who wanted them to mean something for her and have the meanings she wanted.

It looks like a very beautiful design. Do you have another one where we can see the side-view?
