Well, technically, this guard was doing his job and guarding the entrance. It's just that he was being a metaphorical mule (no offense) about it that earned the ire of the Doctor, I think.

Yep! I was hard pressed to write some technobabble explanation for the Doctor, and "arcane energy" sounded like a perfectly cromulent word to use for unicorns/sonic interaction.
