I gave my soulaccidentally
to an aspen, one day
when I was young.
Aspens are tricky that way,
Slender and pretending
to have sprung from magic beans.
This one was laughing with the light
shaking her rice-paper fingers.
Being human, I approached,
carved holes in her white skin,
and she possessed me.

Incidentally, aspens are the largest organisms on earth - entire forests of the things have connected root structures. If one is attacked (by insects, say), the rest release chemicals from their leaves which drive off the bugs. Pretty wild, so good choice for a tree to whom to give your soul - the idea of family in one, all in many, that sort of good paradoxical unity.
And hell yes, James Wright. Charles is also good, if a bit more abstract.

It's beautiful. Why the holy fuck is there 'young(er)'? It looks horrible and seems completely superfluous. Make your mind up one way or the other, for the sake of the poem.

This poem is too. It's rather late to ask my brain to give a detailed critique of anything, or in fact fully understand anything, but I can say that your poem brought out emotions behind my eyes. It's pretty like that. "Slender and pretending" = yes, excellent use of sounds...

I think this is one of my favorite pieces of yours. At least for the moment, when my brain isn't up to full function, just now. "Beautiful, simple, clean..." as HyacinthJen put it. And especially because I love aspens, too... and the imagery is wonderful. This is also a new style for you, I think, simpler. And I like it a lot.
