*cof* *wheeze*I know there're probably a million things wrong with this but there comes a point where you have to put down your pen because you literally cannot command your eyes to focus on the image. So I apologize if there are just things that you can see that I can't.
I referenced the colors and style of the background from the intro animation and used lots of references from official art to get the character's color scheme. The fire was especially challenging for whatever reason and at one point after I had completely drawn and colored it and added effects, I erased the whole thing and redrew it from scratch. I think it was worth the effort. It's still not %100, but I feel like it's a major improvement.
I don't have anything to say about the whirlwind.
I also originally wanted to include Mako and Bolin in the composition but I felt like the central image was ambitious enough as it was for someone who already has a lot of other stuff going on. I've wanted to do a Korra fanart since the original press materials were released, so it's pretty overdue.

This looks AMAZING. Seriously, I love it! The background is so fantastic ... I love how it looks with the solid colours of Korra and the elements. Redrawing the fire from scratch was definitely worth it, it looks quite awesome. I quite like how dark the background is behind it, as opposed to the lower half of the picture ... really balances out the light.

:/ I actually did a swatch thing where I took all the designated skin tones from my palette and put them on the image to show how I would have illustrated a white character as opposed to Korra . Liza being my whitest character and Leigh being my darkest. Min is a character of Korean descent.
Just so that I can address this and get it out of the way, my mother is Cherokee, and the fact that she is brown and I am not is something I have been aware of all my life--I pay attention to these things is what I'm saying. Furthermore, having been raised by Native Americans, I'm also keenly aware of the cultural influences that shaped the character, so I appreciate her on that level. NA characters are rarely portrayed on television and in films, and more rarely still are they done well (see: Reel Injun).
Some folks really do illustrate her as though she's white and say things like, "B-but BLUE EYES!!!" as though Vanessa Williams never existed, although I do think there's also a lot of over-correction. I know you were just drawing attention to the elephant in the room, but I wish you'd had more to say about my piece. I spent a lot of time on it.
