Twi & Sunburst met frequently in the Crystal Empire. Mostly over Flurry Heart at first. It later devolved into antiquing and general nerding out. After discussing theories of magic, they decided to become research partners. Why did Twilight ascend from finishing one spell? Starswirl made hundreds of spells and he never ascended. Heck Starlight reworked spells and didn't ascend. So what made Twilight's special? The dorks poured into books and they learned she literally created her own school of magic. Awesome! How does it work? Guess it's back to research! (yay!) The duo spent years testing and retesting different hypotheses. I won't go into the details here (mainly because I don't know them) but the two did eventually pen a book together. On Friendship Magic.

It's around that time that Twilight's friends pull her aside. They had fun helping her setup the school and all but they have lives they need to get back to. AJ can't run a farm while grading papers and so forth. And now that the first class has graduated, there are more than enough candidates to fill the positions. After a freakout where her friends insisted that they will still be friends, Twilight cuts them loose. The now graduated "Student Six" rise to become the "Professor Six" (as they call themselves) and Sunburst is brought in to teach literal Friendship Magic. Since, you know, he did co-write the textbook.

Twilight & Sunburst worked closely together and both failed to realize they were in love. Luckily the Professor Six were there to ship them so hard they had no choice but to become a couple. That and Starlight pulling Sun aside and point blank tell him. Enter awkward dating scene where anything and everything went wrong. But you know what, that just gave them stories to tell.

The two are currently happily married and live in the Palace of Friendship. They never planned to have kids but life decided they needed some twins. Twi & Sun might have given their unicorn son more attention, and generally fail to connect with their pegasus daughter, but oblivious dorks will be oblivious.
