Description Rapidograph pens and India ink on bristol board.
14 x 17 inches
winter of 2003

This was a project for high school art class. I wanted to see how many dragons I could fit into the space (we were told all semester than only real things (drawings from pictures or 3d objects) were allowed) as well as how much texture I could add (I was trying to impress the teacher).

All of the designs in the smaller circles (except for the one at the bottom) are loosely based on Tolkien's elvish heraldry.

The things in the borders of two of the big circles are written in tengwar and are quotes from The Silmarillion by J. R. R. Tolkien.

"Earendil slew Ancalagon the Black, the mightiest of the dragon-host, and cast him from the sky; and he fell upon the towers of Thangorodrim." (top left circle)
"For Maglor took pity upon Elros and Elrond , and he cherished them, and love grew after between them." (top right circle)

The "modes" used for the lettering were deliberately changed to look more like Quenya (on the left) and Sindarin (on the right), but both are in English; so, the spelling is a bit weird (I also didn't proofread before inking).

Amazing drawing. Dragons and Tolkien's writings, languages and tengwar are some of my favourite things. I really like this one.

Thank you! Glad you like it.

The tengwar were what got me interested in Tolkien's languages. Also, Tolkien is the one to thank/blame for my interest in dragons and fantasy literature (my aunt bought me an illustrated copy of The Hobbit, and I have been hooked ever since).

Thanks! I'm glad you like it. Since we were allowed to draw anything we wanted for the pen and ink project, I knew it had to be dragons for me... and they sort of burst out onto the page.

The teacher was very impressed by the end product and by the amount of effort I put in. He even asked for a copy of it.

Ohh... Detailed ink work = love. The style of the dragons is also very cool. Wonderful work!

Thank you! I had a lot of fun with this, especially the inking. I'm not very good at shading with pen and ink; so, I spent hours mindlessly drawing little dots. (I basically drew this in the style I would use when carving pottery...no shading and not much perspective, but a lot of dragons.)

This is beautiful!! I love the detail and elegance, it's just like real celtic art ^__^ I'm also a huge fan of the Silmarilion.

Thank you! ^_^

It probably was influenced by Celtic art... I have two books on how to do knot patterns (using a grid of dots) that I used to practice from a lot.
