I always think I can do it. Then one eye mysteriously becomes too big. One side of the head gets some weird bump. Any tips?

Hey,
I got that 'one eye gets too big' problem nearly EVERY time I draw! Especially manga. I suggest you make sure how you sit is comfortable. Normally, I would find a wooden table and soft cushion quite great for drawing manga / anime / etc.
Then, work on the eye. Concentrate on making it even. Do a simple sketch, then make the paper upright again. See if it's the same. That's the magic of sketching, you can erase it without any trace. Redo it, only making it smaller if it's too big and bigger if its to small.
Basically, what I'm saying is here, try to NOT stress or anything. That'll worsen your effort.
For the weird bump, I would suggest sketching as well. Then, if it's perfect [if it's not, erase it!], then darken the line. If you want to color it like you want to send it as a present, make sure everything is perfect. The most difficult to do is the pose, hair [for guys, its hard for me] and possibly hands and legs. Most people is fed-up with hands. Its the same for me. So, try not to stress and practice before you do the actual drawing. I find drawing chibis and animals quite easy, but if you focus on manga, it's easy if you focus and NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING disturbs you, you're good to go. Hope this helps!

I'm just starting my first manga drawing attempts, but I've found that another good way to get the same sized manga eyes is to use a ruler. Remember also that if the character you're drawing is facing in a direction other than straight-on, one eye should always be a little smaller.

Maybe a ruler? or fold the paper in half and use a window with some sunlight to get the other side?
