The Roggenmuhme (also known by many other names and roughly translated to Rye Aunt, Rye Mother, Mother of Grain) is a field demon in the German folklore. Legend has it that a farmer's daughter once ventured into the fields to gather cornflowers. But she got lost and would never return home. After this incident, a female ghost would show up in the fields. She guarded the corn and brought fertility. But she was also known for killing workers on the field at midday and abduct children playing in the grain. Sometimes she put on her dark clothes and ran with her wolfs as a thunderstorm across the golden seas.
Her appearance is quite variable. Most often, she is described as an old hag, with really long breasts, which she throws over her shoulders to be out of the way. Her breasts are, on the other hand, hard as iron and contain either blood, poisoned milk or tar. If the Mother of Grain encounters lost children, she will breastfeed them, punch them with her breasts to death, gouge out their eyes or pound them in a butter churn.
Traditionally, farmers leave the last sheaf in the field so that the Mother of Grain can hide there over the winter.
Have you heard of field demons or spirits in your region? I would love to learn about them
