Description Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

The area surrounding McPherson's Farm was the scene of intense fighting on July 1st, 1863, as Confederate General Henry Heth’s Division advanced towards Gettysburg against defending Union cavalry under General John Buford. Union reinforcements from General John Reynolds’ First Corps arrived and counterattacked, and fighting swirled through McPherson’s pasturelands and two fields planted in corn and wheat, as well as through neighbor John Herbst’s woods. McPherson’s barn became a place of refuge for the wounded, and continued as a hospital long after the battle ended.  - Credit for the history and more info can be found here: gettysburg.stonesentinels.com/…

Thank you.  Yes, the whole area looks so peaceful now and it is so hard to believe what once happened there.

The oldest part of our house was built at just this time, hard to imagine so much turmoil in such a peaceful place.

Must be cool to live in a house so old! I read that the house to this farm burned in 1895... I think and was never rebuilt.  The barn is all that remains.  It is very difficult to imagine now how much blood was shed in Gettysburg during 3 days.

Not much of the original part is still evident as it has all been knocked about and extended over the years, it was originally an estate cottage lived in by the foremans family for a little brine extraction works which was dried for salt. Yes, war is such a waste but we never seem to learn any better

It's still interesting that part of your house has that much history. It certainly is and no we do not, unfortunately.
