Description I thought I'd try something big and majestic.
This one took a bit longer than my recent speedpaints.
I had to fight with the scales quite a bit to make them look acceptable. This one had too much potential not to spend time on, I think.

It is still much faster than my other art. This sketching method is very helpful.

Entered into the Dragon Contest. [link]

I literally had to double-take in order to really see it. I am very impressed with the pose, the pride, and the perspective of the piece.

The pose on this one was a lot of fun to work with.
I think the retouched version has better lighting, though... [link]

I'm glad you enjoy this one, as well.

I prefer the retouched version I made, if you haven't seen it, though. [link] I think it has much better contrast and texture.

I'm actually much more satisfied with the retouched version of this picture. I think it's a bit less flat, and has a bit more majesty. [link] I'm glad you enjoy the art.

I think I might actually re-do this one fairly soon. I actually like one of my earlier sketches much more.
It could be a lot more impressive with texture more similar to what I used on the Gentile Eyes picture...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

G220 In reply to Chromamancer [2009-12-08 00:05:47 +0000 UTC]

The texture from Gentile Eyes was very nice, but it might be difficult to incorporate that texture with the scales in this picture. Unless you're going to take out some of the scales all together. How ever you do it I'm sure you'll pull it off quite nicely, I look forward to seeing it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to G220 [2009-12-08 15:39:09 +0000 UTC]

I gave it a shot. It's up now.
It's not exactly the same texture, but it is similar in the way that I didn't really draw the individual scales, like I did on this picture.

I think the retouch has some nice improvements.

I've said it before, I'll say it again now, and I'll continue to say it in the future. I love your scale work.

Very majestic indeed.

The ring of fire reminds me of Death Mountain in Ocarina of Time

I like the pose and layout, but I think this one could look a bit better. I'm contemplating re-drawing this at some point. Maybe I'll do it after a few more months of practice, so it'll look really great.

Chromamancer In reply to Candied-Cheesecake [2009-11-23 03:56:32 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again.

I'm sort of proud of this one, but it took me 8 hour or so. 2 on the pose, shading and fire, then 6 drawing, and re-drawing scales. I actually like one of my sketches more than the finished picture.
Epic time use fail.
That's what led me to try that texturing thing out. I was trying to combine the good aspects of the sketch here, with the polished look of a finished picture.

Maybe I'll have to re-draw this one in 6 months or something.
I'm going make one of those before/after progress pictures sometime.

I will start with my first thought..
wow perrrrrdy haha
I really really like the pose and perspective here! the colors look awesome! and that eye is just great. the different color there was a good choice and I do love that shade and the effect there
and while I think this looks awesome, it does seem like some shadows on the bottom and such would be a good add.
he definitely has a 3D look, but with the brightness above (i really like the highlighting outlines you added ) there isn't much contrast below.
a definite fav Chrom!! I really do think this looks awesome

Chromamancer In reply to StormyB [2009-11-23 04:01:02 +0000 UTC]

Good catch!
The bottom, there could definitely use some more contrast.
Contrast is probably one of the most important parts of these pictures. An area with low contrast can throw a lot of things off.

I'll just have to not make that mistake in the future, and make some even more epic pictures.

StormyB In reply to Chromamancer [2009-12-01 06:06:13 +0000 UTC]

Probably never would have thought to mention it, but it's something you point out a lot. and I'm glad! cause I've noticed I pay far mor attention to it now, and you are right, it brings a lot to a picture
but even still, this piece looks great!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to StormyB [2009-12-02 21:09:05 +0000 UTC]

Contrast mistakes are tough to avoid sometimes. I try to pay attention to that, too, but sometimes those are tricky to notice.

I'll just have to keep a closer eye out when making my newer pictures.
