Description Now here's something different.

I took a break from my current work in progress to play around with Sculptris a bit. It's like a limited version of zbrush, and it's free to download. [link]

I haven't really done anything 3D before, and it was fun to play around with, so I made a dragon.
Now, perhaps I'll see if I can get this printed up some time. That would be neat.

Sculptris slowed down drastically on me when I tried to texture the model, and I didn't want to spend too long on it, so I simply drew the eyes in using Photoshop. Also, it would be fun to turn this into one of those rotatable flash things.

If any of you have done that before, what software do you use to build those?

Edit: Eyes updated! Huzzah!

How do you use photoshop or other paint program to texture your model? You export the .psd file and then? Do you have some tips? I can sculpt but I'd like to color my models, I just don't know how since I think the paint thing is Sculptris is rather bad!

Sculptris started giving me problems when I tried adding texture to the dragon here, so I just decided to take a few screenshots without texture.
I'm glad you enjoy it.

Thank you.

I've been thinking about extending this render, or taking a look at zBrush some time...
This program was fun to work with, so it might be a neat challenge.

WAIT--I have a question. I have sculptris too, and I've been using it a LOT lately...but after a certain point of adding details and details, it CRASHES! How were you able to do all this, do you have a certain ZBrush or something??

ANYWAYZZZZZ......I love this. I have to upload some of the things I've done to give you a better example of what I mean, it won't let me go past a certain point, like it eats up too much memory or something >_O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to A7XSparx [2012-07-11 02:42:43 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.

I did this all in Sculptris.
I had a lot of trouble when it came to painting the surfaces, though. It would slow down to a crawl, so I just took some screenshots, and didn't do much painting in Sculptris itself.

This clocked in at around 100k polygons. I have heard of projects being much larger, so I don't think it's near an upper limit, or anything...
How large can your projects get before it crashes?

Also, you might want to check and see if there is a newer version available for download. Perhaps the bug has been fixed.

A7XSparx In reply to Chromamancer [2012-07-20 17:44:27 +0000 UTC]

That happens to me! :C I was making a model of a character I liked, I reached over 700,000 triangles, and then it just shut down and wouldn't let me do anymore adjusting to him whatsoever, that's how slow it was moving. I noticed the "Draw" and "Grab" tools do the most damage to your memory, and there's no Undo button.

I'll have to look into it. I can't settle for flat scultures on my computer XD

I'll have to play around with it a bit more some time.

Maybe I'll try a larger project, or look into zBrush.
I see people are making some impressive stuff in that program, and I can export from Sculptris into it...

...wow. You never worked with 3d and came up with something so good that I will never reach that lever. I used wings3d and play around with it now and then.

Chromamancer In reply to FoxboyPrower [2012-06-10 13:27:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much.
I thought this program was rather easy to use. After learning the tools, it only took a bit of persistence to get the details right.

I'm sure you can make all kinds of awesome things.
Also, if you haven't tried it, try out that Sculptris program. The other 3D type programs I looked into at various points were extremely difficult to use, but I thought Sculptris was much easier to work with, and more intuitive. I haven't taken a look at Wings3d, so I don't know how that compares, though.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

FoxboyPrower In reply to Chromamancer [2012-06-10 19:11:32 +0000 UTC]

I suppose you do have the experience of how to make a good dragon anyways, it was just a new medium for you.

Wings 3d is very simple to learn and free.
I keep making the same mistakes on my models though. I manage to get important vertices inside the object and can no longer manipulate it. Does Sculptris have a tool that deletes all points inside the object using the overlapping lines that are exposed as the new points?

Sculptris takes some practice and patience to learn but it is a decent free program. I made some lizard dragon bust once. But I could in no way detail the color of the eye like you demonstrated here.

Very good for your first 3-D experience.

BriMercedes [2012-05-31 23:43:19 +0000 UTC]

Ooo, Sculptris is really fun, but frustrating. You must have had a lot of patience, this is wonderful!

To do a turntable, you can import this sculpture into Maya (There's a free non-commercial student version available) and follow this tutorial: [link] That tutorial tells you how to render out png frames of your rotating model. From there, you can make that image sequence into a gif/movie/flash/etc. (there are other tutorials on how to do that I'm sure) I'm sure you can render turntable frames out of Blender but I don't know how to do that. XD

Really?

First time making 3-d sculpture?
...
Who in the world starts 3D with Dragons?!
Awesome people that's who.

But truly it is working out well, are you working on this with the average mouse/computer or a tablet laptop?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to Willow-Pendragon [2012-05-31 20:15:35 +0000 UTC]

I almost always start with dragons.
They're so much fun.

And, thank you. I'm glad you enjoy the result here.
Maybe sometime I'll look into applying textures and things like that. Perhaps I'll try another 3D piece, sometime.

I made this with a desktop setup, with a mouse.

Willow-Pendragon In reply to Chromamancer [2012-05-31 20:19:58 +0000 UTC]

Please do, though I may sound incredibly ...strange.. I truly enjoy watching your work.
Yes dragons are fun. So much more if they were genetically modified to live again..but that's a dream...so far.

All of these people using the mouse!?
I simply respect and admire you because of that.
I seriously have a mental block when I try to force myself to draw with it. >:I

I say tablets!

Chromamancer In reply to Willow-Pendragon [2012-05-31 20:42:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again.
I'm glad to hear it!

Oh, I used a tablet computer for the other art I've made. I just meant this 3D model was made with a mouse.
Years ago, when I drew on all sorts of oekeki boards, I drew exclusively with the mouse. So, I can still use it, but pressure sensitivity makes tablets quite useful and makes most of the art I produce much easier to make.

Willow-Pendragon In reply to Chromamancer [2012-05-31 20:52:40 +0000 UTC]

So..tablet wins? :I
I know what you mean, its simply too easy and wonderful not to love.
Its like drawing with pencil and paper,
except its digital.

Except the brain of course, used by imagination to forge such powerful and stellar images-
sorry babbling.

...But still mouse...
I'd take tablet over you man.
Sorry we just aren't compatible.

I am saving up for one, no more hand-me downs for me!

Agh I always freak out when it comes to 3D arts, yet you pull it off so well it seems so easy somehow XD
that being said, oh wow! I really like those spikes to the side of its face! The horns look ferocious and its eyes somehow mesmerizing
Wicked awesome job!

I had to work with the program and learn the tools, but I got this model to turn out like I imagined it. That was rather satisfying.
That program was surprisingly easy to pick up and learn.

I'm glad to hear that you enjoy the result here. It was definitely a fun exercise.

Hmm I hear a lot of people had that experience with these new 3D tools. Maybe I should give it a chance one day a lot of people make some killer art with them, this being no exception

legarsraide [2012-05-31 12:44:27 +0000 UTC]

Have you ever draw any 3D models before? If not, you should exploit this way seriously so! The way you made it is simply excellent .

Yes, i tried 3D modeling last year, with the famous Autodesk Maya2012. 1 long month to follow a 1000 page tutorial to finally create an apple which looked like more to a potato . I will maybe return in later^^.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Chromamancer In reply to legarsraide [2012-05-31 13:03:51 +0000 UTC]

I haven't tried to make any 3d models before. I am rather pleased with how this turned out, though.
It's... like I imagined it to be, for once.

I've never tried Maya, but it sounds much more difficult to use... Sculptris was rather intuitive to use, and it's free to download. I didn't really read up on it at all, but things went decently smoothly once I found the "grab" tool.
It's sort of like working with clay to be, except without the mess, clay, or reality getting in the way.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

legarsraide In reply to Chromamancer [2012-05-31 15:09:06 +0000 UTC]

So you never tried 3D modeling. well as i said so, you really should exploit this way to make new deviation, that's really good.

For the rest, yeah Maya isn't easy to use, besides costing almost $6000 ( i bough it for free if you see what i mean ), but before using it, i never touched any 3D modeling software. With that tutorial, i created an "almost" apple , so i'm sure if you have some free time and find a good tutorial, you can learn it ^^. There's also the famous Blender, which is an open source software, opponent of Maya, which also allow to create excellent things. if you're curious, look at Sintel on youtube, it's a 15 minutes long animation movie created only with Blender.
