Description Believe it or not, this is the first Venom commission Ive done. Kinda strange, right? After all these years and probably a couple hundred commissions, this is the first Venom. Weird. Anyways, thats too bad because I had a really good time working on him. He's one of those characters that you can really put your own stamp on in terms of overall look.

I wasnt really sure what I wanted my Venom to look like, but I remembered an image I'd seen once by Simon Bisley. It looked almost like a gorilla had been taken over by the symbiote and I really liked that idea. It was different and kinda funky looking. This is sort of my take on that with the huge arms, long torso and kind of short legs. The face is a bit of a generic Venom though.

Anyways, this was a real fun one. I wouldnt mind working on the character some more.

Prismacolor cool and warm markers with white paint on vellum bristol board.

Somehow for me it carries the old school vibe. Meaning it in the best possible way of course. Over the top, muscular, savage beast. The way Venom is supposed to be. Too cool.

WARNING! Carry on reading! Or you will die, even if you only looked at the word warning!
Once there was a little girl called Clarissa, she was ten-years-old and she lived in a mental hospital, because she killed her mom and her dad. She got so bad she went to kill all the staff in the hospital so the More-government decided that best idea was to get rid of her so they set up a special room to kill her, as humane as possible but it went wrong the machine they were using went wrong. And she sat there in agony for hours until she died.
Now every week on the day of her death she returns to the person that reads this letter, on a monday night at 12:00a.m. She creeps into your room and kills you slowly, by cutting you and watching you bleed to death.
Now send this to ten other pictures on this one site, and she will haunt someone else who doesn't. This isn't fake. apparently, if u copy and paste this to ten comments in the next ten minutes u will have the best day of ur life tomorrow. u will either get kissed or asked out, if u break this chain u will see a little dead girl in your room tonight. in 53 mins someone will say i love you or im sorry

I just found this in another great artist's favourites and I like this a lot. The Gorilla concept is pretty easy to imagine as the human would be infested, in a way, and hindering his/her genetics so it could take a step back and show the primordial nature of the symbiont’s ways versus a human's true nature. Its a good concept overall. Try it again. Nice one, 'Veddie Nyze indeed'.

I'd be sure to commission a Venom-piece from you, if I only had the money, he's one of my favourite characters in superhero-comics and you've done him so well. I like how not all of the piece is a strict lineart, like we see part of his hand be more in the shadow as well as his other leg as well. Such cool rendering on the muscles, bringing his skin "material" sort of more visible. The webs leading to his feet suggests that Spidey isn't too far, which gives the piece a bit more action even if it is a calmer sort of pose from Venom's part. I wouldn't be too worried for the "generic" face of Venom, I mean, you've still done a great job you know? I love how you use light and shadow in your works, especially in greyscale.

I wonder if a person of your status and skill has any time on his hands to pursue some of your own likes and tastes. How much do you get to draw something completely for yourself, or does work keep you super busy?

I do get time, but often end up using it to chill hehe. I work enough on my art as a pro that I usually dont want to spend the free time creating. I do wish that wasn't the case though.

Yeah, I don't really know much about a professional's daily routine, but I bet it's good to get a bit of time off from holding the pencil (: And everyone spends their free time differently in the end.

It varies greatly from person to person and depending on whether or not you're really swamped with work and deadlines or have it easy. I try to make things as easy on myself as I can.I hate when quality suffers because of a deadline. Still though, I work enough that I usually have a hard time finding motivation for personal work in the meantime.

No kidding? I grew up in Birmingham, actually. Obviously I'm stationed elsewhere these days - but still call it home. You may or may not know this - but a lot of your sketch works are highly sought after on CGC's circuits. Not that I'm surprised - it's impressive stuff sir.

I still have some family there. I've only been a couple times when I was a kid though.

What's the CGC circuit? The graded comics?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

grey56 In reply to ChristopherStevens [2013-04-04 19:35:52 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I don't get home much either these days - just how it goes unfortunately. I have friends these days though that are living in Nashville and they seem to love it.

But yes - the graded comics were what I was referring to. Specifically their 'signature series line' that features a lot of sketch covers.
