Description Command confirmed. Executing program 4.
So, funny story, this started out as a Gaster speedpaint. But then SAI decided to crash , I lost 80% of my work, and, annoyed that I lost half an hour's work, I decided to recreate the previous painting.

Then I realized: I really wanted to go grungy and conceptual.

I started to play around a bit, add a few things, different colors... And this is the result.

I have to be honest: I like this version much more.

50 minutes speedpaint.

Very cool as usual, Denny I'm kinda jealous of your ability to control those painterly strokes. It really gives the figure a sinister power, as though energy is just radiating off of it.

The light logic on the helmet and shoulder armor is great especially, and the top of the image comes across strongly from afar, which works well compositionally. However, I got a bit lost at the torso /legs of the figure from thumbnail view. I think that brightening the blue in the background a tad or using a subtle blue backlight would help pull out the figure from the background.

Hey Mae!!! Thank you a lot for the sweet comment. I really enjoyed working on this piece.

Haha, it's funny that you say I control those strokes... Truth be told, I got extremely frustrated with this painting because SAI is such a foreign beast to me. I can't shade the way I want - opacity pressure is not working at all, and blending just muddles everything! Shading felt like a pain. The only thing that DID work, however, was making this evaporating power effect, and that only because I somehow found a brush setting that would help me there. I tried to do the same with the torso and the legs, but... well, let's just say my patience ran out after not being able to shade properly and intuitively.
I will try it next time with more backlighting! I thought that the top light would have been sufficient to elevate the character from the background, but I'll definitely try it out.

Np

Honestly, I think you did a good job with the blending despite those difficulties, and the rougher look really works for this piece. I've never used SAI before (b/c mac), but from what I've heard it can be finicky. I didn't know that you used opacity pressure to paint - I don't use it too often and switch opacity manually instead; how do you control it?

More backlight is like more cowbell ... always more cowbell o,o

Basically I use pen pressure to control how much color goes onto the picture. I still have 100% opacity as a default, but depending on how soft or light I use my pen, more or less color goes on. That helps with the overall unity and you can control how to mix. It's very much like using colored pencils.

What's a cowbell?
