where where you exactly?
that doesn't look like the main Kilauea caldera

oh, Kilauea on the southern slope of the big island and Hilo is on the east side. Kilauea has several different vents. the currently active one is to the east of the main caldera. this one didn't appear to be the main caldera.

volcanoes in Hawaii have rift zones radiating off from the main peak that are active after the main eruption at the summit has ended. this is the part of Kilauea that is currently erupting

its a really neat area oh and those calderas were once lava lakes.
