Description The customer appraised the sparkling gem with four half-closed lids.  "It is a shiny bauble but my jump drive is perfectly adequate."

Rover nodded.  "I'm sure it is.  Good and sturdy, so I hear.  'Course I don't believe a doggone word of the rest of what folks say about you fellah's.  Naw.  I'm cocksure the Pokalogs are just as fast as...well, ain't important."  Rover waved the subject away with a shrug.

The big alien frowned.  "Say...what do they say?"

"Why, that you're a mite on the slow side."  Rover feigned a look of confusion.  "Surely you heard the talk.  But don't you worry none.  I got faith that those ships of yours can move as fast as a light beam when y'all set your mind to it."

The big green fellow looked a bit embarassed.  "Well, they get us from place to place.  I suppose they aren't as fast as some of those daredevil Spree ships."

Rover nodded.  "Slow and steady, that's the way to go.  So you really couldn't use somethin' that could boost your power output and speed your ship up a good ten times."  With a nanchalant shrug he began to slip the stone back into his bag.

"Um...wait!"

A grin slid across the cowboy's face.  "What's that now?"

"Can that little...thing...do all of that?"

Rover's grin grew wider.  He'd tossed his rope in the right direction.  Now he just had to tighten the lasso and he'd have a heap of a sale.  He pulled the gem back out and held it up high as it glowed and glittered with an internal light.  "Don't tell me you ain't never seen one of these afore?  Why you stick this in your jetstream drive and you'll take off like greased lightnin'.  Why, you could reach Tellus 2 in nothin' short of four ticks.  Not to mention it's about the purdiest thing you could add to your engine room."

The customer chewed on his lip with one snaggle tooth.  "Do you take Darius credits?"

"I take any currency you got, pardner."  He had him.  Now came the fun part...haggling.  "Now these, puppies, don't come cheap.  But for a nice fellah like you I can let you have her for, oh, five hundred."

"Five hundred?  For nothing more than a bit of speed?  I don't think..."

Rover leaned against the wall confidently as he dickered.  With some species this could go on for hours.  But he didn't mind.

----
Rover is an honest trader, never selling faulty merchindise and he usually has fair prices and will give folks a deal if he knows they need it.  But he can be a bit of a sheister sometimes, getting people to buy things that they really don't need.

This brilliant. Have I mentioned that my favorite parts about your pictures are the mini stories you add? I love them! ^.^ They always give the picture some context and help us learn more about the characters!

Anyway... I was wondering, might I be able to draw Rover? He's one of my favorite characters in the Hi Ho Hyperdrive universe. I'll give you full credit of course.

Aw! Thanks! I always am thinking of a little story whenever I'm drawing.

Are kidding? I would LOVE to see you draw Rover! I always love to see how other people render my characters.

Heh, Rover can be very persuasive when he wants to be and he generally knows how customers think.

Can you imagine that sparkly thing brightening up a dull engine room?

I sure can! It's almost too pretty to put to work, like a giant piece of jewelry....

Yep, he seems like a charismatic fellow, definitely. And I meant the accent, too--I always admire writers who can get across the sound and "feel" of an accent through their word and spelling choices both. (My very favorite author, Brian Jacques, did that a whole lot, though the accents he worked with were based on those of the British isles.)

I rather like honest sheisters, as oxymoronic as that sounds. While they may con you into buying things you don't need, whatever they sell you WILL do exactly what they say it will.

Yeah. And when stuff needs work he'll say so. He may downplay it a bit, but you do know what you're getting with him.

I like how the alien's name "Pokealog" sounds like poke-a-long and subtly emphasizes their slowness.  Go Rover go!  Beautifully drawn. I also like how you've got an even spread of detail on both characters. Sometimes I notice that people's main characters tend to get all the artist's attention, while their side characters almost fade into the background. Not with you--you always have plenty of interesting detail, like those cool striped spikes on the Pokealog.

Ooh, shiny!! I like the job you did lighting them with it. It's cool to see to see an example of Rover's trading. Nice to know he's honest, even if he stretches it a bit at times.

Thanks! It was fun to light. I wanted to make it look like it has a last of charge to it.

He is pretty proud of his trading skills. He does have a tendency to stretch thing a bit...he'd make a good fisherman

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-21 19:09:36 +0000 UTC]

Looks pretty powerful! Make that pretty and powerful.

I bet he would talk the fish into paying him to have a chance to be caught by him.
EDIT:  Oh, good gracious, I just got your pun now! *face palm* No wonder it didn't make sense before. ...Yes, I imagine he would be a great 'fisherman'.
Reminds me of an experience a brother from here had that made him known as 'the fisherman' by a few.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-22 00:33:20 +0000 UTC]

LOL!  I was talking about his affinity for tall tales.  Fishermen are known for amping up the size of that fish a good deal.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-22 01:04:21 +0000 UTC]

Oh, good heavens, I'm really not with it today. I got up late. Lol, Oh well, I gotcha now... Yes, he would indeed!
My grandpa used to say 'he caught a fish *this* big.' And he would hold his hands far apart, but if you looked at his hand, his finger and thumb were spread a few inches apart. Must have been a minnow.
I'm sure Rover would make a fisher the other way too. From door to door that is. For the way he has with people, but not embellishment.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-22 19:58:55 +0000 UTC]

LOL! My grandpa does that TOO! Must be a grandpa thing.

Rover would make a great brother. He loves people and gets enthusiastic about things he likes. His excitment is contageous.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-22 21:15:32 +0000 UTC]

LOL, oh that's so hilarious! I guess great grandpas think alike!

I could see that in him. Enthusiasm is good to have and be around. I wonder, how would Flyspur do?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-22 21:32:45 +0000 UTC]

Flyspur is very smart and logical and has a fantastic memory. While it would be hard for him to go door to door and talk to strangers he would have amazing reasoning skills and always remember where his scriptures were. (something Rover would have major problems with). And with four arms he could juggle his bible, teach book and tablet without a second thought.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-22 22:13:53 +0000 UTC]

Woa, with four arms that would be an advantage! and a book bag in his fourth arm. I think we'd eventually get him out of his shell to talking to people. And it would be fantastic to have a memory like that.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-23 06:22:29 +0000 UTC]

Of course we would! although, it would be tough for him at the beginning. He doesn't have very good self esteem. But if something's important he always rises to the occasion.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-23 22:16:17 +0000 UTC]

It's good that he'd have the kind of determination. I'd like to work with him. I bet song 137 would be perfect for him.

What music do Jssfloon have?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-24 02:33:42 +0000 UTC]

Oh! It would be!

It's mostly percussion and winds. They have things similar to panpipes and flutes. They have a circle of small steel plates that sounds like a cross between a xylophone and a steel drum. I'll have to send you some links of instruments...when I get to my computer.

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-24 02:45:55 +0000 UTC]

Here are a few sounds that would make up Jssfloon music.  Who knows.  Maybe we'll see a Jssfloon band sooner or later.  Your questions always give me great ideas.

Oh wow, I just had a taste of a trip to Jssfloon! The one with those two guys playing those hang drum things is really cool. That one with those glass harps really fits Jssfloon in my mind. with four arms I bet the designs of some of their instruments and the way they play them could be kinda cool and different. I'd love to see a Jssfloon band! I'd like to see the setting they play in. It'b be cool to see other things you might see on a vacation there too. Landscapes, trinkets, some little animals, some of the more fancy traditional dress if any...
I always like it when I find some neat idea. So I'm happy I can give you some! Your ideas are so cool in the first place! Seriously.

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-25 01:59:00 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad you think they fit.  I LOVE the glasses playing.  It has water involved so that makes it all the more Jssfloon.

Hmmmmmm...I'm sensing a pintrest site!  I have an account but haven't really played with it yet.  I may do that with some hyperdrive stuff.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2015-05-25 02:41:45 +0000 UTC]

I figured water would be involved more. I imagined a band playing just on a beach standing with their feet in the water for some reason.

Heh, believe it or not, I've hardly touched Pinterest ever, so don't know totally what it's about. But, yeah!

I was just taking a peek at some of the other vids in your "Coon Instruments' play list. (hope that's ok) Have you ever seen Animusic?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to John-AM [2015-05-25 02:48:05 +0000 UTC]

That's kind of what I had in mind.  Maybe at the edge of a shallow lagoon or something.

All I did was make an account.  I haven't done ANYTHING with it yet.  So....yeah.  I think it's just where you can collect pictures you like off of random places on the internet and catagorize them in one place.

Of course it's okay!

I have not.  What is it?
