Description Another slot filled in my switcheroo meme
This time Gender Swapped.

Flyssyn (the female form of Flyspur) does not look much different than her male counterpart a couple dimension's over.  She is taller, a bit stronger and has the upswept pointy ears of a female.  But it's her personality and relationship with Rover that is the real change.

Rover, being the perfect western gentleman, treats ladies like ladies with all the door opening and hat tipping he can dish out. Which the Jssfloon in general don't even blink an eyelash at as he is alien and is expected to behave so. But when Flyssyn becomes his pal he becomes quite protective of her and the way others treat her as a Third, often spouting: "Don't you know how to treat a LADY!"  On their adventures he often holds her back from doing things he would have deliberately sent Flyspur on, insisting that it's not work for a 'lady', even if, as a Jssfloon it would be a more practical task to perform than him.

She bucks quite a bit at this treatment, as it is usually the females of the Jssfloon who have the more physical jobs as they are bigger and stronger than the males.  She has tried a million times to explain this to him but it never seems to stick.  So she ends up disobeying orders to play it safe on a frequent basis.  Not that she is in any way reckless but she knows her abilities and will use them despite her friend's overprotection.

I love how different her relationship with Rover is. More like big brother/little sister than reckless brother/cautious brother. Also her name is awesome!

This one was fun to come up with! It was fun to imagine how the dynamic would be different.

In their current relationship Rover is certainly in the role of the little brother. In this au story he is the older brother.

Aww...

For some reason, I can totally imagine his hat being blown into a body of water or a tree, something that he's not comfortable retrieving it from, and Flyssyn goes to get it while Rover's on the ground yelling at her that she'll get hurt if she doesn't come back....

Ha ha! Yep! Total big brother syndrome.

Cool drawing, and I especially liked the description, the changes you figured it would make in the story! It's interesting to see that aspect of female Jssfloons explored more, that they're physically stronger than the men.

Thank you!  That is actually the most fun part of this project.  Not just coming up with how the character will look different, but how that AU would work with such a major story change.

Yeah.  On Jssfloon the gender roles are almost completely reversed.  Here, men are usually larger and stronger than women and are often expected to be the breadwinners.  (not in every case, of course but usually)  In Jssfloon society the females definetly have a height and muscle tone advantage over the males.  Both tend to work, though, and leave their young ones in the care of grandparents.  But the females are generally more likely to qualify for manual labor jobs.

You're welcome! I can definitely imagine it stretches the storytelling muscles!

That's very interesting--I remember you mentioning that, yes, that the female Jssfloons are stronger, so that would make sense that they take most of the lifting and hauling jobs. Are they also usually considered the "speakers" for their households, and more often the politicians, or are those roles basically 50/50, with males in positions of authority like that a lot of the time too? Just wondered.

Awww! Flyspur's female version is even cuter! X3 Not too much a of difference from the male form, but still stinkin' sweet. XD I must hug her~ Would be interesting to see your version of a female Rover sometime!

Aw! Thanks!
It was a bit different a challenge than gender swapping anyone else. There was a very fine line between making him look feminine and making him look exactly the same.

Well! I WILL be doing this meme with Rover some time.

You're welcome!

Would be interesting to what Flyspur thinks of his female counterpart.

Awesome! Can't wait to see your version of female Rover~

Aw, he looks just as pretty as a lady~ Lol, this AU is both hilarious and awesome. Her relationship with Rover sounds quite comical but sweet. Now I wonder how it would be if the whole crew was gender bent!

chill13 In reply to LaDeary [2017-03-01 01:05:31 +0000 UTC]

He does.
Heh.  While Rover sends Flyspur into some pretty crazy things he would certainly hesitate to do the same thing to a girl.

That would be intereting.

XDD Oh my goodness! Kinda like Megabro said, this is certainly strange, but being all AU and all.~ Not looking extremely different then Flyspur would certainly be... confusing. I could just imagine if Rover, or any other of the crew from the regular reality, ran into this AU and saw her. It would be, surprising yet difficult to adjust to, to say the least. I like Rover and Flyssyn's relationship though, well in a relative way at least. I'm sure Rover's over protectiveness would be quite annoying to her.

Flyssyn is such an awesome name.

Yeah.  Alternate Universe with a story change.  Not anything....else.

Heh.  Yeah.  It would be quite a shock if the 'verses ever met!

Oh, yeah.  She gets quite annoyed with him on a frequent basis.

Thanks!

John-AM In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 18:57:05 +0000 UTC]

Oh, heheh, well yeah. That's a comfort. Haha.

Depending on how many of these switcharoos you do, and with how many characters, I wonder how many of  them would be part of the same universe. Ooh! It'd be interesting if in another AU, with both Flyspur's and Rovers female counterparts. I wonder about that relationship.

Heheh, so at least that part is... similar-ish to regular Rover and Flyspur. Except a different direction of annoyance.

You're welcome!

This is quite funny, and a very good example of conflicting gender roles in interspecies relations.

I thought it would make for an interesting story.

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 19:58:01 +0000 UTC]

I can imagine that if Rover and Flyspur ever met Bec and Telk, it could get amusing when Rover tells the two girls, "Let us guys handle it," to which Telk would be like, "You do realize that I am stronger than both of you combined, correct?"

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2017-02-27 20:05:08 +0000 UTC]

That would be hilarious! I think with some species he realizes the social differences and capabilities. But Flyssyn is so much smaller than him and dainty and Bec is human so he would treat them both accordingly. Tell he might take exception with. Although he wouldn't be any less chivalrous.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 20:16:11 +0000 UTC]

Yep. Where they're both smaller, the instinct to protect would probably be pretty strong.
I doubt either Bec or Telk would mind a little chivalry, though Bec would get really annoyed if there was a fight going on and Rover kept blocking her shot at the enemy in an attempt to protect her.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2017-02-27 20:20:37 +0000 UTC]

And that exactly the kind of thing he would end up doing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 20:52:47 +0000 UTC]

Meanwhile, Telk probably would have shoved Flyspur behind her to keep him out of the line of fire.

chill13 In reply to Rebel-Rider [2017-02-27 20:57:31 +0000 UTC]

Which he wouldn't protest. Flyspur is not a coward in the least. But he is perfectly aware of his physical limitations as well as his strengths. And he knows that in most fights he would be in the way more than helpful.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Rebel-Rider In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 20:58:57 +0000 UTC]

Yep, plus Telk's got very thick skin, so something that could do serious harm to Flyspur would do little more than annoy her.

This AU is rather adorable though I can understand on many levels why Flyssyn chafes at Rover's protectiveness.

chill13 In reply to UniversesCollideInc [2017-02-27 17:11:32 +0000 UTC]

I don't care what women's lib people say.  Treating a lady with kindness and chivalry is a sign of a good guy.  HOWEVER, underestimating someone because of their gender is where it gets annoying.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UniversesCollideInc In reply to chill13 [2017-02-27 17:59:09 +0000 UTC]

Agreed. I like that Flyssyn's reactions is more along the lines of "I can take care of myself; I'm equipped for it." (which is a reasonable thing to be annoyed about) rather than the whole "Chivalry is chauvinism!" attitude that's given women's lib a bad name. Real men and real women are themselves and treating others with respect is definitely part of that.

I had the pleasant experience of my family encouraging self-expression, which included things like my male cousin getting a set of homemade butterfly wings from our aunt just like we girls (and my younger brother not getting any was age-related because he was only 2 at the time and she felt bad she hadn't made him his own after seeing how happy and careful he was with mine) and everyone being encouraged to learn to cook (I'm not very good but that's lack of practice more than anything and my brother is fantastic at it).
