There's a fan hypothesis that this is the First Doctor only younger. I know fans can lynch me on this but really think about it. Not much is known about the Doctor's past and its been implied that he was very infamous on Gallifrey before he started travelling. I think the Time Lords sent him to Earth on mission because the natural flow of time was disturbed by the Shalka and planned to rid the universe of them and this was just phase one of their plan. This story also might be the first time the Doctor meets his TARDIS which would explain why he chose that TARDIS inparticular when he fled from Gallifrey with Susan. Anyway this is all speculation and not much about the Doctor's past is known but maybe things will change about that with the upcoming 50th Anniversary.
