From the blooming, I can tell you worked with a lot of water on this one; but even so, you managed to keep the figure and background very well separated. There's no bleeding or going over the borders. How did you manage that?

I used not a lot of water here. The watercolor-ish effect here is because of the difference between the amount of water in the new watercolour layer and the earlier one, not dried yet and particularly compounded with the fresh one. I'm sorry for my English. I hope my explanation is still helpful.

Oh, I see. Thanks. But your color separation is wonderful anyway! I always have trouble keeping them appart and smooth.

Thank you!
Oh, maybe it's because of brushes you use?

Nah. I don't think it's the brushes (I have a couple of good ones). Maybe I just need more confidence when putting down the background, so I get it more even. But even so, I would love to be able to get to have the background toe-to-toe with the figure without any gaps, but also without overlap. By the way. Do you start coloring the backround first or the figure first? (sorry to bother you with all the questions).

I like to use kolinsky sable round brushes around the nr 3 for example. Chinese calligraphy brushes are helps to control the water and such too. I don't like synthetic brushes for watercolours when you work with layers.
I don't have strict preferences about the order of colouring. I think, I paint the lighter parts first and the darker parts later.

I've never used Chinese caligraphy ones. I always thought they looked too "soft", with little spring... but if you say they're good, I maybe get one next time I come accross one.

Not all of them are soft. But even so they're good in control. If you're going to buy Chinese calligraphy brushes pay attention to the small ones.
Aside from that, have you tried this kind of squirrel brushes btw? ----> Β krasniykarandash.ru/upload/resβ¦

No, I haven't. I think those are called "cat's tounge" or something like that, right?
What do you recommend when picking up a Chinese caligraphy brush? Are there notorious differences (materials, brands, etc.)?

chernotrav In reply to KaosNoKamisama [2019-01-14 16:03:15 +0000 UTC]
Yes, "cat's tongue"! I just get two of them recently and I feel sorry for not paying my attention to those brushes before.
Unfortunately I'm not even sure about the materials of brushes I have (I don't know Chinese). If you know how the standard round brush Nr 3 looks like, find something similar but with longer (obviously) hair. Also, I think, kolinsky sable round brush Nr 3 is a universal tool when you work with watercolour on A4 size paper.
I have a few brushes for DRAWING MANGA, they're similar to Chinese calligraphy brushes and very comfortable to use for the details as well as for the backgrounds. Good if you can find some of those too.

So beautiful, I really like how you draw faces and blend colors. If I may ask, how much water do you typically use and do you stretch your paper?

Thank you very much!
It's difficult to say how much water I use. Uh... I mostly work on DRY paper with NOT very big amount of water to be able to control it yet to let the watercolour flow. If it helps ): I stretch paper if the paper is 200gsm or less and the work is gonna be A4 or bigger. This one is small and A6.
