Description

Some work in progress shots for one of the bust commissions I’m working on.

I decided to give fibermesh another try and generated the hair using low fiber count but higher coverage settings to get thicker strands. I find this fits better with the sculpted geom bangs I have in the front.

At this stage it is ready for coloring and texturing. =]

Also for those curious, this stage  would be an example of a complete (minus a posed expression) "basic features" bust with some additional cost for the detailed hair.  Want to know more? Check out my commission info here!

Details:

Modeled and sculpted in Zbrush using dynamesh and fibermesh features. Time spent so far (minus time spent mucking around with settings) is about 3 hours.

It's not that difficult to setup, but I do find it tricky to work/style with depending on what you want to use it for. In any case, I would definitely try it out for yourself. It's a great tool to take advantage of. =]

Damn that looks cool. I wish I could get hair to look like that, but I haven't really tried sculpting it out in zBrush/Mudbox yet. Worth a try.

Definitely worth a try. I find the process to be much more organic than traditional methods. If you don't have access to Mudbox or Zbtush, you can try Sculptris, which is free to download from Pixologic. =]

Thank you! The fibermesh hair was rather tricky to figure out. Half way I started sculpting geom and then decided to give it another shot. The trick was to make sure your initial settings are good before generating it as a subtool. Took a bunch of tries to get something that fit.

Yea, Definitely the trick, try get it looking sweet right from the get go cause those groom brushes tend to go a little crazy sometimes and don't do what you need them to do haha

The details on Spark's hair! Daymn!

Great job on your first 3D Character Bust commission bro! I also like how you paid strong attention to getting the anatomical structure of the upper torse/neck correct. Lovin' that sternum. The eyes/eyelids and fangs are the two things that caught my eye as focal points - then followed by Spark's breasts... lmao

Thanks! =] I have been taught to make use of fine  detail to make a piece stand out. Solid anatomy, fine points, curves and angles.. The problem with 3d is that it's very tempting to overdo it, and this is a subject to test myself on that aspect. For one, it's a stylized cartoon-like character, so I can't go too 'real' on it without losing its essence. For another, it's a female character, so I have to avoid using harsh lines and angles.

Good to hear that the eyes and fangs caught your eye. Those along with the hair (it will become obvious when I add color) is what stood out to me in the original design, and I'm trying to bring it into this piece as well. =]  The breasts well, I actually toned those down for now and may bring more focus to them on a full body sculpt that the commissioner may ask me to do in the future.

I wouldn't be surprised. It's the same when I'm in my rendering stages of an art piece via Photoshop, it's tempting to overdo it and you gotta know when to stop.

Your understanding of the anatomy continues to impress me, I still remember when you talked about every body part we had to work out in the gym - it really helps!

All the best finishing up the rest of your client's commission. Let's hope it will be upgraded to a full body sculpt soon!
