Description Here's a quick study I did in zbrush a while back to become acquainted with its new features;

Dynamesh

Can you believe that this entire bust started out from a simple sphere? That's what dynamesh does. It dynamically adjusts your topology/polygon count to the shape of the model as you are sculpting. Before you would have to plan ahead and create a base geometry to sculpt onto. For example simple cylinders/tubes for the antennae would have to be in place, otherwise it would be quite messy to do in zbrush without creating separate meshes.

This is perhaps the greatest advancement in digital sculpting thus far. It further removes the tediousness of 3d modeling and allows the artist to jump straight into the concept without having to initially worry about things like geometry, edge flow, or polygon count. As such, it also drastically speeds up the process. In the time it would take to produce a simple sketch on paper, an artist adept with zbrush could conceivably sculpt a 'sketch' in full 3d.

Case and point? The time I took for this piece: Roughly 40 minutes, all straight from my head. No previous sketches or plans involved. =]

Material blending and rendering

To go along with the rapid prototyping idea, zbrush also now has material blending and rendering capabilities that are slowly becoming comparable to those of higher end packages. Before I would have to take sculpts into maya or 3ds max to get subsurface scattering for skin or image based lighting for ambient effects for example. All of that is in zbrush now and it's fairly easy to use.

The entire render for this piece was done in zbrush. No external renders or composites needed.

Tiling, noise and advanced brushes

There are also a bunch of new brushes and sculpting features too. Most notably is the surface noise feature, which lets you quickly apply bumps or patterns to a model. I used it to give a kind of bumpy/smooth pattern you see on beetle shells.

So yeah, those are some of the things I tried on this piece. Hope you enjoy! Next things to play with are fur, image composting and render passes for an even higher level of fidelity. =]

Really cool, I remember my attempt at creating a full model from a sphere in Zbrush once...very messy and awkward looking to say the least. The new features sound great, I only wish I had a powerful enough computer to try it out myself! Modelling was always one of my passions and to see models like this made digitally inspires me to want to try as well

Yeah, it takes some getting used to, but the learning curve isn't too bad.. and even though it's a pretty powerful software, it actually doesn't need a very powerful computer to fun smoothly. It doesn't use your video card to render or display the model for example, so even old systems can run fine. See for yourself on the system specs: [link]

If your computer is less than 5 years old, I'm confident that it can run zbrush fine! =]

Hey. Pretty awesome model. Would love to see a full body sketch of this character, as the 'bug-man' kind of theme interests me, and this is very well done so far. As for the features; been dreaming of dynamesh for so many years now, it's insane, can't wait to give it a test myself. Have these been applied to Zbrush or is there an upcoming update that's currently in beta? Not seen anything in the way of e-mails about this iirc, but going to take a snoop around the forums shortly. Anyway, keep up the good work, and thanks for the information on the new features

Thanks! The features I mention in the description have been around since the beginning of this year. I believe they were released with version 4.0 R2 so you should be able to get those features if you upgrade to the latest version. It's definitely worth trying out. =]

Ahah. I'm using R3. Must just've looked past it. Seems like a nice feature though. Quite intuitive. Will have to experiment with this at some point. Thanks again for the info. Was interesting seeing your work with it, and reading the descriptions you've given

Ah then you should have what you need. =] It's just a matter of figuring out how to use it. I would recommend taking a look at their tutorial series here: [link]

Those videos are awesome. Loving seeing what artists are doing with the new tools. Didn't even know about the curve brush thingy! I really need to get playing with Zbrush. I'm not much of an artist/designer myself, and don't use the softwares too much (would like to use them more, but only myself to blame ), but I think this warrents spending some time on it .

Thanks again for the information! The videos were awesome, and it's inspiring to see the work of artists like yourself. It's genuinely seeing things like this that make me really want to get stuck in every now and then . Added you to my watch list so I can hopefully see more of these awesome sketches in future! Keep up the good work chemb0t
