Ah, old-school chubby Pikachu. This was before the whole Pikachu population descided to enlist in the Lt. Surge Pokémon slim feast special training.

As you might have noticed, every Pikachu since generation 1 has lost some weight. The newest incarnation is rather slim and fast, whilst in the past they where chubby. They all owe this to Lt. Surge's special training. No one really knows the secret, only Pikachus, but we're unable to talk to them now and ask them about this, so we'll have to wait for this secret to be lifted.

Look through the sprite art for each generation, they did lose weight.

Maybe the creators decided a fitter Pikachu would do better on battles and not lose stamina fighting with evolved Pokemon forms.

It's to keep up with the times. As technology got better the sprite art could be more detailed. The current Pikachu sprite wouldn't fit into the original sprite data. Also it's larger if you'd compare both sprites next to each other (I think)

Yeah I guess it's a natural transition when Ash puts Pikachu through so much battling.
Pikachu becomes faster, fitter, stronger and more agile. He can take on evolved forms and beat them. Why the Pikachu now can whack his evolved form Raichu. No problem at all.

Pikachus are hardcore. They evolved from the masochistic Pichu (From the Pokédex entries it reads, that Pichu harms itself whenever it uses electric attacks.)

it doesnt make sense for an electric pokemon to harm itself with its own electricity

Platinum: The electric sacs in its cheeks are small. If even a little electricity leaks, it becomes shocked.
I own the silver edition in german. It is stated there that it shocks itself whilst using electric attacks, but I can't find the entry online just yet...
