Description I haven't been involved in a pumpkin carving since I was a wee little thing, so this year I was determined to participate in the ritual scarification of gourd flesh!

Since jack o' lanterns are traditional scary, I thought about the scariest possible thing to carve into my pumpkin...

The Other Mother from Neil Gaiman's Coraline, of course!

I freehanded a design onto the pumpkin--very loosely inspired by the style of the movie--trying to keep it simple, since I didn't want to overreach my skills (as if I have any idea how not to overreach my skills) and end up with a mutilated pumpkin.

I didn't do any research of pumpkin carving techniques until 2am the morning before we were supposed to be playing with the sharp objects (that's also when I drew out the design)...I also didn't invest in a carving kit with a tiny saw. Guys, I am here to tell you that LIFE WOULD BE EASIER WITH A TINY SAW. Next year, tiny saw, you and me. Next year.

I made do with kitchen knives, which got tricky tricky, lemme tell you.

But she turned out wicked cool, I think, and she was posted on Neil Gaiman's blog! Which made me feel like the coolest person on the internet for at least a whole fifteen minutes.

haha, I can imagine. I have never carved a pumpkin to my recollection...maybe as a kid? Not really my thing actually but I do love looking at them!
