Work documentation and some insight to how I work for anyone curious. Finished piece here

1)Quick gestural drawing to capture the general idea and energy of each character.
2) Simple skeletal frame built on top of the gesture to start as a foundation for anatomy.
3) Anatomy build-up. Skeletal frame underneath acts as a framework so there's not too much guessing on where things go.
4) Revision to the far right figure as it was too close to the center figure, muddying the silhouette. Need to keep character silhouettes clear as possible, especially in such an interactive composition.
5) Final pass on the anatomy and rough background sketch. Important to stay loose but still accurate.
6) Rough sketch of the armor. Anatomical figures act as a foundation to design armor in a believable way. I like movement and energy when designing armor/clothing, so I keep this pretty gestural to keep it feeling more natural. In relation to movement, the anatomical figures act as an anchor point which helps figure out what armor pieces should be flowing or pulling/weighted on the body.
7) Final pass on the armor. Not overly detailed as it will just be painted over, but just enough so I know the form and details of each piece.
8) Color rough to capture the general mood and temperature. The theme here was "cold and gloomy".
9) Shadows and highlights added to define the form. With "gloomy" in mind, lighting is more diffused so contrast and highlights are more subtle.
10-11) Detailing.
12) Finished. Background is cooled down, lightened and changed to better work with the composition so figures pop out more. Areas like the feet, hair or loose parts of armor are painted rough against more detailed areas. This removes both weight and focus to pull attention back towards the center.

This is very informative and helpful, would've been with just the progress pics alone. It's awesome you explain what you did, additionally.
