Marowak and Cubone are closely related to Kangaskhan, sharing their marsupial-like physiology. Adult Marowak and Cubone have pouches in which they carry their newborns until the baby Cubone developes their cranial exoskeleton. At that point they are weaned and capable of taking care of themselves.

Marowak and Cubone typically live in familial groups but face many predators and other dangers, often resulting in orphaned Cubone. The myth that Cubone wears its mother's skull is just that, a myth, but the reason it developed in the first place was because of the unfortunate tendency to see young Cubone living without their parents and being forced to fend for themselves. As it is common that adults do not have very long lifespans, young Cubone are robust and develop quickly, they would not be able to survive as a species otherwise.
