Description guh.

i had so much fun drawing this. SO. MUCH. FUN. it's been such a long time since i've done an actual full-blown pencil drawing. it was crucial that i do another. C:

so, this is james from silent hill 2 (which i haven't played, so no spoilers, please). he is quite a cool guy, with all his headbanging and such.
if you don't know what i'm talking, btw, about you need to see this:
[link]

ANYWAY.
i had to use photoshop to darken the picture, because every time i scanned it the gamma would be incredibly low. for some reason.
if you can, critique, please! pencil drawing is something i'd like to improve on so any suggestions/tips are very appreciated. <333

Prettyyyy~ *u* I like a lot, especially heez hair.

As for critique, his nose got a bit big, but JEEZ when you're using that small of a reference I don't blame you. Choose bigger pictures, crazy. Another thing, his chin has this dip-in thing going on in your picture that isn't in the ref. Maybe that was just an attempt on your part to make his chin more chin-like. His nose could use some more contrast on the side.

The thing that stands out to me the most, though, are all the harsh outlines. I know it's kind-of second-nature to an artist who is used to inking things, making lineart, etc. but when you're doing a semi-realistic/realistic portrait you want to do the bare minimum amount of harsh lines. The bits I'm talking about are mainly his nose, face outline, mouth, and ear. Obviously there are going to be some times when you need harsh lines, mouths, nostrils and the tops of eyes are usually a few places where you do. You'll be surprised how much definition you can get with pure shading, though. I know I was.

I've only ever done portraits from photographs of real people, though, so I am no expert on this style. Great job, Chamwise~

OMG yes yes oh yay critique, finally <3333

yes, i noticed the things like the nose and chin afterwards :C i showed my dad and he was like 'wtf why is his nose so big.' proportions are definitely something i need to watch out for in the future. and i know, the reference is really small lol, but i loved that picture too much and i couldn't find a bigger version ;n; so i just zoomed it in instead.

regarding the hard lines, though, i was kind of incorporating the appleseed style of drawing; very hard outlines, with soft shading on the inside [link] . i mainly tried it out with this picture because it's a CG instead of a real photo, so i thought i could take a few liberties with it, but you are very right. i should have been a bit more careful, because now that you mention it, i see that his cheek, chin and nose have way too much definition.

well sonnu, i am glad you like it, and thank you so so much for critiquing i love you i will take all that you said to heart. <3

Haha, I've totally done stuff like that before. "This is so prettyyyy too bad I can barely see it D:" A good way to keep things in proportion is to either measure with your pencil (which can work even with a small reference if you're like "Okay I am going to make this three times as big" or whatever) or by what we call "mapping"... which is basically you look at your reference, start by drawing an eye, then follow the shapes of shadows and basically anything you can see to help you out as a landmark, like, "this shadow here is this big and it leads into this crease and then here's his other eye" ...I dunno it's kind-of hard to explain without being able to demonstrate, lol, but tell me if you get me. If not I can scrounge up something to demonstrate.

Ahh, I thought you were probably doing it on purpose, but I mentioned it anyway just incase. XD I totally get you, like I said I've never done a portrait from anything other than a real photograph, so I'm just like burrhurr I donno.

I love you too~ Aww I'm glad ;u; You can count on me to help you out wherever I can... although in all honesty we're pretty-much equal in skill so I donno how much more I can help you with, lol.

ah, yes! i have heard pencil artists speak of this technique before, but i admit i didn't use it here. i usually do all my scaling by eye, which i rather prefer, but i really should try that method out. it seems to work for a lot of people. C:

haha, no problem! i myself was a little nervous for the end result, because i had never drawn from a CG reference before, so i was worried it would look really plastic. which it kind of does... but i am happy with it all the same!

d'aw, thank you, sonnu ;n; in return, ilroy will return any panties that have been stolen from you. expect a garbage truck at your house tomorrow.
...e_e yeah that's right, he took that much. and i bet you didn't even notice.

Yeah I know what you mean, scaling by eye is the most satisfying, but when I do I ALWAYS make the eyes too far apart ;n; that is why digital art is nice fufufu then I can just move it >u> I actually started a pencil portrait from a digital art thing now because of you. huhuhuhu I donno how well it's turning out but we shall see. >u>

Good! You should be happy, it's great.

Hooray my pantsu! I have missed you so.

aw, i've done that a lot in the past, making eyes too far apart ;n; my dad called it my avatar phase, LOL. and i agree, photoshop is the best thing ever.

...askdhaksd i can't wait to see it sonnu and thank you again <3

haha, they missed you, too. i'll have to find another person whose pantsu ilroy can steal, though. ಠ_ಠ
