Description "When King Thror gazed into the Arkenstone, did he see the great Dwarven kingdoms of his ancestors? Did it show him things to come? Splendor beyond imagination? Power just within his grasp? Did it whisper secrets to himβ€”showing him the weaknesses of others, or what they too desired?

... and what would Thorin Oakenshield see if he gazed into the Arkenstone?"

Higgins Black Magic ink and inkwash on 11 x 14 smooth Bristol, using Winsor & Newton series 7 brushes (#1, and mostly #2), and a flat/wide brush for spot blacks. Finished with black and white pencil for final details. Had a little trouble getting smooth lighting, with minor ink shine -- some adjustments in Photoshop.

The rough sketch and a photo reference of my husband here .

And because some were asking how I do things, here is a Facebook note showing some in-progress photos.

Edited 7/17/14: Replaced the old photograph with a scan.

Do you suppose it's a Silmaril?

I know many people have discussed the possibility, but for me personally, I don't believe it is. It's fascinating wondering about, nonetheless!

That's been driving me nuts! I wish we could at least see the rest of Thrain's story in the movies, even if it's just a flashback. Starting to wonder if we ever will... but we can at least hope!

have you seen this? thriin.tumblr.com/post/6996478… that's why I started hoping they could actually meet before the end, I just can't believe they would spare the character only for DoS extended (THAT would be nasty, PJ!! )

I think I might have seen that before... and of course, there is also some of the trailer footage with what looks like Thrain attacking Gandalf. But... instead, we got Azog.Β  I guess we'll just have to see. I keep hoping the extended edition for DoS will be VERY full. Lots of things I wanted to see in that one (still enjoyed it of course, but... itching for more! LOL!).

yes, I didn't think there's anything missing in theatrical AUJ but with DoS I had sometimes the feeling there was more to it which might be in the extended. I remember about the footage, it was in trailers even to AUJ, I was never sure if it is Thrain but lots of people thought so, yes, we have to wait but if PJ won't coclude his story(not even in TABA extended) I'm deffo going to write to him!! not that it would change anything, just for the need to express myself why to put hints about him here and there and not to conclude the story?

I guess that's the downside of re-editing/writing/etc something as you're putting it out. It does seem a little mean to tease us with that potential Thrain footage since the beginning and then if you do nothing with it, much less the character? Augh! I mean, a lot of us know how his story ended of course... we just want to see it (especially PJ's version)! *laughs* Especially if we're getting teased a bit like that.

Plus they did such a great job on making the character look so awesome. It'd be a shame to barely even mention his poor name again. I guess we'll see what comes out in the extended editions, much less theatrical.
