In Greek mythology, Thalia (Θάλεια, ‘flourishing’, ‘bloom’) is one of the two muses of the theater (alongside with Melpomene); she inspires comedy, and she is also the muse of bucolic or pastoral poetry. Like all muses, she is the daughter of Zeus and Mnemosyne (memory).
She is a rural deity and is usually depicted as a smiling young woman, with a vivacious look and mocking eyes, holding in her hands a comic mask as her main attribute and, sometimes, a shepherd's crook, an ivy wreath on the head as a symbol of the immortality and roadway of boots or sandals.
