Description The first painting I did in a loooooong while, and a very important one at that. This is it, the painting that starts it all in my in-progress story Endlands. The main character Alden sees this in a dream and, being a painter, paints, thus catapulting him unwillingly into a downward spiraling story. Obviously, Alden can paint much better than me, so picture this, but better rendered, and there you go. Still, for being painted by me, I pretty pleased with how it came out. I'm debating doing a more true-to-life version of the same landscape, since as Alden sees it and as it's painted here it's a little stylized (ie, the actual Endlands don't have checkerboard hills, but that's how I initially saw it in a dream, so that's how Alden initially sees it too). Hopefully the story itself follows soon.

Acrylic on canvas panel, about 3 hours, I think.

I think this is the best of the paintings. Your clouds are very inspired, I think because you were most unafraid of using layers and shades there. I love love love the orange glow of the sky. Love.

The ground's pretty good as well, but I think your castle could use a bit of work--it looks a bit more 2-d than the rest of the painting.

My other comment is to improve upon your texturing. The sky is so good at least in part because of the obvious texture of it, and the brown portion of the earth definitely has the texture of rock, at least in several places. The texture of the hills is a bit inconsistent, which makes it hard to tell what the hills are supposed to be made of, but that might just be me.

But the sky. Oh, the sky. <3

Thanks for the feedback! The sky was definitely fun to paint. I had a few pictures of orange storm clouds on my computer for reference, but for the most part I just kinda felt it out. You're right that the castle is the least good part of the painting; I think because it's by nature not as abstract, so it was harder to get to look right. And yeah, getting texture right is a challenge, in all the paintings I've done. Learning experience! Woo!
