If they had wanted to get it down all they would have had to do was have someone throw something on top of it. Due to the inertia of the object, the object's impact would impart the robot with a downward force. However, due to the relative size of the objects, like hitting it with a baseball, the actual change in the robot's velocity would be very small. To get it down faster, all you would have to do is use enough objects and it will eventually come down, hopefully with a small enough speed that the mass of the mecha doesn't cause any significant damage to any property. Also, they could have just had someone throw a rope over it or something and played with it like a parade balloon.

Yes, but that would have resulted in property damage (to stuff that wasn't 'theirs') and also probably damaged the mecha. Then again, the rocket probably managed to do that anyways.
