I never stopped to think how the Space Marines looks like when babies... I thought they growth in tanks and were expelled only when they were adults

Oh no - in official warhammer they are regular kids with normal family - some of them are braver and stronger than others - so they are chosen to pass tests which, in case they don't die, will make them able to take implants. Chapters have they own planets which they are monitoring in case that they will find there some new recruits.
But these squiby adoptable ones - they are marines since they are toddlers.
