The masks we wear are often used to protect us from being embarassed, hurt or rejected. Some of us pretend to be strong when our world is falling apart. Others want to be liked and please people so they agree even when they secretly disagree to avoid conflict. We smile when we don't feel like smiling and pretend to be happy when we are desperately unhappy. Masks have many uses, not only to protect but also to manipulate and it is only when the mask is removed that we know the difference.
