Description An Open Source OC for

Callsign: Corona
Name: Jessica Kamaka
Height: 5'9"
Weight: 155 lbs
Hair: Blonde
Eyes: Dark Brown (fiery orange when using her powers)
Skin tone: Polynesian
Angel Falls designation: Heroine

Powers

Plasma control: Corona has the unique ability to transition any inert matter into plasma. While this usually means creating a substance of intense heat, there are many cool plasmas (neon), and even some substances are plasma at super-cool temperatures (0.1 K).

Corona cannot actually create the matter, only transform what she has available into a plasma state. To this end, she often carries quantities of potentially useful substances. I.e. a container of neon gas makes for a safe low energy sign or beacon. The air around her could be turend into a roiling plasma for use as a weapon or propulsion. Ultra-cold plasma is exceedingly difficult to create and control and she is often limited to creating no more than a thimble-full at a time, unless she is in the depths of space.

Corona finds it easiest to transition gasses into plasma. It is the state of matter closest to plasma. If deprived of gas--with the abundance of hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen in earth's atmosphere a real rarity--she would be able to transform far less material. In practice she is able to convert and control about 1/10th as much liquid into plasma as she would gas, and this drops by another factor of 10 for solids. With little effort she can convert an amout of gas into plasma to completely sheath her form in a fiery corona of plasma. If she pushes herself, she can significantly increase this but at the cost of leaving herself quite drained and lethargic. (Her normal aura is about 3 cubic feet and she can push it to a max of about 30 cubic feet. Reduce these figures by 1/10th for liquid and 1/100 for solids.)

In practice, she tends to use hot plasmas as weapons and for transportation and cold plasmas for defensive purposes. Cool plasmas can make fairly effective force-fields able to easily ward off small arms fire. For ranged combat, her preferred engagement, she projects thin fiery streams of super-hot plasma. She has also been known to make swords and other shapes out of plasma. (Plasma has a very strong magnetic field and she uses this to her advantage in combat whenever she can.) She's wicked good entertainment at parties.

In an atmosphere, her flight is typically limited to about mach 4.8, but in space she can rocket at close to 0.1 light speed and is able to make the trip from the sun to earth in about 80-85 minutes.

Temperature resistance: Corona is highly resistant to extremes of temperatures. This ranges from temperatures as low as 5 kelvin (the average temperature of space) to as high as several thousand degrees centigrade (the surface of a sun or a nuclear explosion).

Skills

Jessica is a skilled pilot and has over 2500 hours in the F-18. She was under consideration for the Blue Angels when the opportunity to join the space program emerged and changed her life forever.

From an early age, Jessica loved airplanes, flight, and space travel. Before joining the Navy, she earned a BS in Aerospace Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. She went back and earned her Masters in the same field just prior to joining the space program.

After the tragic incident that awoke her powers, she began formally studying Aikido. This she uses mainly as a means to temporarily redirect opponents and allow her time to escape to ranged combat--her speciality.

From her days in the military and astronaut training, Jessica became an avid fitness buff. She was always trying to stay in top shape to compete with the male dominated society of fighter pilots. Today, she continues to keep her body in top shape to assist in her role as superhero.

History

"Houston, this is Sundiver. We are initiating final booster correction on solar approach."

The radio emitted an eerie static as Commander Kamaka and Captain Jessup stared out the darkened windows at the fiery orange ball filling their view. Nothing said "you are far away from home" like the nearly seventeen minute delay between sending a transmission and receiving a response, but that's what a mission to the sun meant: being far from home in vast darkness of space with only a giant ball of fiery plasma to remind you what you were doing so far from ... from anything that felt like home.

Home for the last seven months had been a small cramped vessel with about 500 square feet of living space, decked out in the latest clean-room white, surrounded by metal, ceramics, and glass, ray shielded from electromagnetic radiation, solar winds, photon bombardment, and anything else the scientists could dream up. It meant eating food from a tube, working out six hours a day just to keep your bones and muscles from disintegrating in near zero gravity environment. It meant having your heartrate, breathing, blood pressure, and other vital signs constantly monitored for stress. It meant spending months upon months with only one other person to speak with, to share your thoughts with, to keep you entertained. It meant forming attachments whether you wanted to form them or not. It meant life was hell and your life was a science experiment. It meant taking fifteen minutes to pee. When she returned home, she promised herself that she would design a better toilet for space!

The strangely blonde polynesian looked over at her companion and smiled weakly. "God, I hate the wait between messages."

The dark haired man's only response was to grunt and nod weakly.

For the next several minutes the two sat in a silence only broken by occasional radio static: the sun flaring up and sending a burst of electromagnetic radiation hurtling at the ship. The two had long since gotten used to that. It had steadily gotten worse as they drew closer and closer to their target.

After a few minutes, Captain Jessup rested his hand upon Commander Kamaka's shoulder and pointed at a dark spot on the sun. "Do you see that? It looks big."

The woman nodded, "Yeah, too big. Looks like we didn't come all the way up here for nothing. Jack, why don't you start prepping the instruments and lets take a few readings."

"Yeah ..."

It really was engrossing, looking at the sun. The orange-yellow plasma roiled and tumbled about it's surface: the corona. It leapt up in huge arcs of heat so massive and so intense that any one of them would easily consume the earth, rendering it into nothing more than mass of fuel to keep the orb burning. All the while, that dark spot grew and spread as the fires lept and roiled all about.

"How's it going back there, Jack?"

"Almost done, one more series of checks and the sensors will be prepped for record."

"Copy, I'm going to prep the chemical drive in case we need to make a fast burn."

The orange mass continued to do what the sun does so well. It burned. The spot grew. The fire arced in angry oblivion. The radio crackled.

"... sunspot ... increasing ... fast ... sector ... burn ..."

"What's that on the radio, Jess?"

"... repeat ... massive ... ejection ... in ... burn ..."

Jess punched the button to speak even as she realized there wasn't enough time. "Say again Huston; you're breaking up! Say again, over."

"Oh crap Jess, these readings are off the charts. I'm getting huge fluctuations in the EM field near the spot."

Glancing out the porthole, Jess's eyes widened as she watched the dark spot suddenly become a mound of swelling orange.

"Jess, get us out of here!"

It didn't matter what he said. Commander Kamaka was already at the controls flipping switches. "Strap in!"

"Go, go, go! Now Jess, go!"

"Initiating burn. 3 ... 2 ... burn"

The chemical engine roared to life as liqud hydrogen mixed with liquid oxygen and ignited. The craft shuddered to life and began accelerating away from the sun even as the massive yellow spot surged to life throwing a twisted earth-sized spiral of yellow-white plasma into space. It was a mere two seconds into the burn when the computers flickered and began rebooting. A second later the ship began melting. A second after that Commander Kamaka found herself floating in the depths of space, a tear vaporizing from her face.

She gapsed for breath, her lungs sucking in a mass of subatomic particls: protons, electrons, neutrons, along with traces of heavier particles: oxygen, nitrogen, carbon. She coughed, wheezed, spit the soup back into space even as her eyes turned a fiery orange and the mass of plasma surrounded her body in a yellow-orange cacoon.
