Wonderful spiky branches made by frost

YAY I am glad you captured a nice pattern

I have been enjoying frost, at least if its too cold to go out

There is still something nice to capture with a fun challenge

So glad to have your approval, dear Gigi - the queen of frost! Β  I was inspired by your frost photos, but I couldn't get any further magnification from my 100 mm lens.Β  Would you mind telling what lens did you use for those awesome frost photos?Β  Stay warm up there in Canana!

Oh I am honored that I inspired you

I used a Nikon micro 40mm lensΒ

I can give you more detail if you need

I am not on my computer or near my camera at the moment

Thanks a lot, dear!Β  Apparently Nikon micro 40mm lens is an excellent and inexpensive macro lens!Β

Funny thing is - I went to check that this was taken with the 100 mm lens, Cecily - thought so the instant I saw it. What an excellent piece of glass that is for this work - detail, clarity, super tonal capture. A study in grey par excellence!

Cheers

Thank you so much for the encouragement, dear David! Β  I wish I had a closeup lens attached to my 100 mm to get closer to the frost at the time!Β  Β  I should try to acquire some more gadgets when I have the time!Β

That lens is so good, Cecily, that you easily crop and blow up parts of this or similar shots to magnification - say the top left quarter could easily be full size. But, I'm all for buying gadgets - I've got cupboards full of them!

Dear David, have you tried to mount a 58mm 250D Close-up Lens to your 100mm macro lens?Β  I'm not sure whether it would fit the same dimension and screw right on top of it?
I've tried to crop and blow up some parts, but the clarity can not match up those with a 40mm lens: gigi50.deviantart.com/art/Fros…

In a word, no I've not tried that, and I've just read up on the Canon close-up D series. They look good. You would need a 67 mm version for the 100 mm macro lens as that is the diameter. But the results from the 58 mm on the Canon f/1.4 look good. Re Gigi's shot - wow - but I do not know enough about Nikon lenses to compare it to a shot from the 100 mm macro. I need some frost here to check this all out for myself.

Thank you so much for helping out, David!Β  I'm confused with this product - www.amazon.com/Canon-250D-Clos… , which is 58mm but 3"x3"x1" (product dimensions).Β  It definitely does not fit the 67mm lens.Β  Why does the table in this article ( www.eos-magazine.com/EOS%20Col… ) show that type 250D is available for EF100 mm lens, while 250D only comes in 52mm & 58mm? Does that mean that there are yet more filters to convert the size?Β  Thank you again!

This is a bit confusing, Cecily - no doubt about that. I think that there are only four sizes avaviable - 52, 58, 72, and 77 mm fittings, see this article ==> cpn.canon-europe.com/content/e… . For the 67 mm and other sizes, then stepping rings must be used, and there is a reference to that in the article that you linked. Depending on what other lenses you have or use regularly you would need a step up from 58 to 67 mm, or a step down from 77 to 67 mm. Such stepping rings are not expensive. If you have a professional camera shop nearby, then you might want to take advice to check on the best fitting. The results do look impressive and the effect for the 100 mm macro is about the best you could get. I think I shall have to get one.

Anyway, I hope that helps.

Thank you so much, dear David!Β  Sounds like I'll need to take a trip to the local store to look at the lenses in person; Or, I could wait to hear from you again after you got one of those lenses first!Β

It'll be a while, Cecily - got this Australian trip to sort out first. Have you tried reversing a lens - you need a reversing ring, but with that you can mount the front of the lens to the camera body - very powerful technique, but you have to work manually all the time.

Oh, it's so beautiful! The frost creates a well defined abstract picture all on its own, but the sharpness and detail, along with the small drops of condensation in the background makes the picture really jump out at you.Β

Great shot!Β
