Love the freckles on Fairchild. I haven't read the comic in 10 years, but she didn't have them then. If you thought it up, kudos - it seems natural.

I'm afraid i can't take credit for the freckles, lol. J. Scott Campbell started adding them to Fairchild and other characters sometime after his work on Danger Girl. I think he just went crazy with adding birthmarks and the like. and i guess i got crazy too, lol.

great work as always, man... btw, i'm not exactly sure how dynamic your art when story-telling is, but if it's on par with your pinups, you should definitely be applying to wildstorm. though, maybe they might be turned off by the huge campbell influence (doubtful)... don't know... doesn't hurt to try though.

yeah, i'm not sure either, lol. i'm working on sequential stuff everyday. in fact, i just finished an original comic of mine called "SUMMONS" . check it out by clicking the name, or the link in my sig. i'd love some feedback! (and also support, lol)

hmm... let's see... well, i didn't really read the story... just sorta lookin at the art's dynamics. could use a little bit of work perhaps. don't know if every frame needs a black outline. it gets a bit confusing on the third page where your character, kristine, is removing her shirt. the part in question is the final frame with the window. it seems to bleed into the previous frame making it feel like she's facing the creepy demon dude. not sure if this is the look you're going for, but that's what it feels like. also, i'm sure poses are pretty tough... but you don't wanna make it feel TOO much of a copy. the reason i say this is because the first thing that came to mind on the first page was masane amaha from witchblade. it's pretty evident that it's from this pic [link] so just be careful where you're getting your poses. though i don't blame you for using it... it's a pretty awesome and dynamic angle. as for the art itself, awesome as always... only thing i think needs work is perhaps an inker. it looks like it's just colors on pencil. not sure if that's the look you're going for, but it starts to feel a bit amateur-ish when the lines aren't cleaned up totally (not that your lines don't already loo fairly clean). although, on the other hand, i have seen a few comic artists that refuse to ink their work just because that's the style they're going for. yours i suppose could go either way, but i think nice clean inking could definitely compliment it. as for the last page, definitely a strong page... yeah, the glass and reflection thing is sorta clichΓ© at best... but i think it definitely works and it's a dynamic page. i'm a big fan of letting things bleed over one another. perhaps doing that more often in the other pages' frames once in a while might help to break up the "frame" look a bit? you know... have like a couple of frames sorta cut out the subject a bit and let them overlap another. i don't know. i can't even draw a body. i just know what i like. lol... i say just flip through some of your most influential comic artists' work and get a feel on how they tell the story. i know you're probably already doing that, but i'm sure it definitely will help the more you do it. the idea is to look at a page, not having to read it, and go "wow... that's an awesome page!" lol... a good example of what i'm talking about is this one [link] by jeff campbell. it's just an ad, but i look at it and go "man... i want that fucking bag!" lmao!!! anyway, i'm not comic artist, but hopefully that kinda gives you an idea of what i'm thinkin.

oh, and btw, back to praising your work after bashing it... lol... i love how you draw faces. there's alot of emotion in them... as well as humor at times. i think that's kinda missing these days. that's one of the reasons i really like jeff's work. he knows how to draw facial expressions. that's a really important factor in comic work. if the characters feel serious or plastic all the time... it just sorta loses the feeling. i think your style definitely fits gen13, definitely throw together some all original works and send it in to wildstorm. my suggestion is to go to one of the cons and have jim lee critique your stuff. getting your name out there, especially with someone like him would definitely be a good thing. your style's like a million times better than the a number of the artists i've been seeing them commission. don't let me even get started on some of those... ugh... although, i'd like gen13 to go back to its roots of "teenage superheros" and not "superhero teenagers"... if you get what i'm saying. i want my damn lack-luster plots full of comedic expression and t&a... lol... ooo... they need get adam warren back on board with story writing.

holy crap... i just wrote a novel... sorry.

CdubbArt In reply to jmk1999 [2010-05-29 09:33:41 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i know i still have a ways to go with consistent dynamic storytelling. I'm still learning. probably one of the reasons i haven't started any submissions just yet. i needed to see this thru, i guess. and the first few pages of the comic are inked actually. it's just the meat of the book is in pencil with colors over it. i would've loved to get the whole book inked. but i needed to get the book done, lol. i was working on it way too long and i needed to show myself that i could complete something according to a deadline. not to mention, some of the people i was working with needed more time as well. there are a lot of other interesting angle and shot choices in the other pages of the comic also. i hope you'll pick up a copy to give me further feedback, since you've given me this much, lol. oh, and about the witchblade ref... yeah, i know it's pretty blatant, but any further deviation from that pose would've just made it look like i was trying too hard, in my opinon. the pose was just perfect for what i had in mind. and i know the pose is very familiar, and maybe i haven't paid enough dues to just take a pose like that for my little indy comic, but copied poses have been done to death in professional comics.(i.e. Superman cover where Supes is holding a dead Supergirl) i didn't think it was that inappropriate, lol. and i say this, having been confronted by others with the same question. trust me, i know how it's viewed and i don't usually "STEAL" poses from other artists.

All in all, thanks so much for all the constructive feedback. and i don't think you bashed it, btw, lol. you were honest with me and that's what i need. it's been hard but... i think i'm just now starting to take my art seriously, lol. so, hopefully, you'll be seeing more like this Gen13 pin-up in the near future. thanks again for your comments! and please check out my full book when you get a chance. i don't mind if you bash it, as long as you give it a chance, lol.

yeah, i'll try and check it out. i'm glad you liked my little critique. i like how you draw the characters and i think with a bit of practice and study of influential artists, you'll definitely go pretty far. as for the poses, i'm more a fan of the idea of poses from real life as oppose to other artists' work. but that's just me i guess.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CdubbArt In reply to jmk1999 [2010-06-08 19:29:20 +0000 UTC]

i totally agree with drawing better poses from real life. that's what i do mostly, believe it or not. but there's definitely something to be learned from studying already finished works. i mean, when you think about it, it's just like painting classes in college. usually, the teacher will have you replicate the masters' works and see how close you get. this can be invaluable to developing one's own style in a particular medium. and i don't think comics are any different. all the same, i am getting more accustomed to drawing from photo reference or real life. but drawing from the "comic masters" kind of gave me the confidence i needed to draw from real life finally, if that makes any sense, lol.

jmk1999 In reply to CdubbArt [2010-06-10 05:00:18 +0000 UTC]

yeah, my major wasn't actually art... it was print with a design concentration... so it was like typography and adobe software and stuff... as well as the print side like ink and paper. i wanted to take a figure drawing class, but they required pre-reqs... it was pretty lame. maybe i'll take one some time... either that or just draw naked people from the internet.

Oh man... they definitely should re-do the series with you as their penciller...

Well, as it is right now, you should pen almost every series... that way, I'd buy them all.

Yup, you're that great.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

CdubbArt In reply to Esbe77 [2010-05-26 01:23:23 +0000 UTC]

thanks again, man. the series is still going, but i would like to see some J. Scott Campbell prodigy take over the artwork. or at least the next Ed Benes. that may be asking a bit much though, lol.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Esbe77 In reply to CdubbArt [2010-05-26 01:45:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, if it is any consollation to you, I think of you as one of these followers... but I think it's even better that you have your own style and not a Benes or Campbell. Your art truly rings originality and it would benefit to be published somewhere important... And I'm sure it will.

CdubbArt In reply to Esbe77 [2010-05-26 03:15:36 +0000 UTC]

that goes beyond a consolation for me, man. i appreciate even being in the same category as them. i'm glad my style is showing thru, tho.
