Description Okay this started as the Pre Dom War challenge...however I didn't finish in time so it got shelved for awhile.

Only decided to finish it because a friend at work showed me the method he uses to paint textures, and this model became a suitable test dummy. I have scrapped five different textures in the name of practice (non near this finished) and have finally gotten sick of this model and want to move onto a new enviro project, so im calling her done.

Thanks guys

Awesome modeling, well done! I was thinking it might be nice to upload this model on Sketchfab - you can then embed it in full 3D in your journal here on DA: sketchfab-3d.deviantart.com/jo… .

It's pretty curious that she has arms fully covered in armor, but the body where are the vital organs, is exposed. xD

Haha yeah...I don't know what animes I was watching at the time I made this, but I'm guessing they had improperly dressed female warriors in them or something. Were I to redo this I would not go with the scantily clad armor style haha.

You know, I really, REALLY like it. The metal textures are specially well done, I love the unique stayle they got.

I am afraid though, that that head looks a wee bit too gigantic. It probably isn't Proportion-wise, but it does look like it. Great job on her though, Real good.

Looks pretty good, you've achieved a lot with the textures making the low-poly model look more detailed/3-dimensional than it is.

NuclearD00d [2011-02-19 17:51:21 +0000 UTC]

Not bad quality. I have to ask though, why wear a armor that protects everything but her vital organs?
Also, the weight distribution is terrible as well, the weapon is like a viking sword, except with just one edge nullifying half of its advantage of being big, heavy and sharp.

Not only that, but judging from the obvious lack of strong muscles, she wouldn't be able to fight like that. It almost looks like she stole 20% of a set of armor meant for heavily armed,
heavily trained soldiers. The sword looks like a chunk of a steel door hammered to a wooden spear. The thing is, such a thing wouldn't hold for more than three swings before breaking.

I know this is artsy design, to defy logic and common sense for style... but dude. wouldn't it make more sense to go for a specific style instead of two.
The middle of the woman, is light clothes, hinting at a theif class, or a lower citizen gone rouge. The armor looks like a more western stylization of medieval Japanese armor.

The weapon, would not work, it's shaped like a sword, but does not have an edge as the thickness seems to be about the thickness of half her arm.
It has the overall Japanese stereotype overkill size. The thing is, if the hilt of this "sword" isn't made of a sturdier material than wood, it wont stay intact..

...and to be quite honest, if it were metal it would probably bend quite quickly. But it's graphically advanced, so I'll give you that.

CDB-ART In reply to NuclearD00d [2011-02-20 00:44:29 +0000 UTC]

Haha ya alot of good points, I based her design on alot of common Japanese rpg elements, so her armor/weapon is indeed completely impractical. Thanks very much for taking the time to right up your crits, its very much appreciated

it's a critique, i'll give you that but i don't agree with you, it's not really that 'crazy' valid in my opinion.
It's funny those who can't do criticise like crazy.

i guess you forgot the purpose of this model was for texturing process, not accuracy if every game was 100% accurate, well, we wouldn't have 95% of the games out there.

he wasn't going for accuracy, he was going for practice. which he did very well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NuclearD00d In reply to PolyMune [2011-02-20 05:22:49 +0000 UTC]

The author didn't mind, nor should you. Besides, 95% of games usually suck.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

PolyMune In reply to NuclearD00d [2011-02-20 05:46:37 +0000 UTC]

then why are you critiquing game design work?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NuclearD00d In reply to PolyMune [2011-02-20 10:35:46 +0000 UTC]

Isn't it obvious? The work has potential to become even greater. I point out the bad things and hopefully inspire the artist to become even greater. I've never received a negative reaction once from the one I give critique to, it's just people like you who feel that you need to go on the defensive. Seriously, what the hell is up with that?

The-Great-Shiniku In reply to NuclearD00d [2011-02-19 18:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Meh. I see this critique way too often, but the truth of the matter is, if you fire up almost any game, you'll see the same type of thing. The artist is probably well aware the armor makes no sense, but is trying to emulate the work he sees done by his favorite artists in the industry.

Ever heard the saying "two wrongs does not make a right"?
Artsy mistakes defying logic and physics is common, not right.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

The-Great-Shiniku In reply to NuclearD00d [2011-02-20 18:36:30 +0000 UTC]

That's all well and good if any of it were a 'wrong' or a 'mistake'. It's more like a design choice. And believe me, the pros who make these choices to begin with know a hell a lot more about design than you or I. So it only makes sense to try and emulate what they do.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

NuclearD00d In reply to The-Great-Shiniku [2011-02-20 19:24:19 +0000 UTC]

I never claimed to know anything about design. I claim to know about history, armor, physics and logic. Right and wrong in this context is judged by the survivability of the soldiers in question. To create armor that is a lot less effective while also knowing the much more effective alternative, is a mistake, plain and simple.

Ah, I was under the impression this was a game-art model, not an actual person preparing for war. My mistake.

NuclearD00d In reply to The-Great-Shiniku [2011-02-21 06:06:41 +0000 UTC]

Actually, it's both. It's a game-art model of a person preparing for war.

PolyMune In reply to The-Great-Shiniku [2011-02-19 20:36:44 +0000 UTC]

i agree with you. me thinks buddy was just lookin' to get some attention. 95% of games aren't accurate they are stylistic.

i think this model is done well, given it was for texturing practice mainly, and he's improved so much.

NuclearD00d In reply to PolyMune [2011-02-20 05:32:44 +0000 UTC]

There's no need to try and write me down as an attention whore.
Seriously, what are you then? Think about that question a little.

I made a critique, the author appreciated it, there's no reason to whine.
