Lovely texture 
I usually add textures on a separate layer and alter its transparency, but the black areas remain black

If the application you use (The Gimp, Photoshop, etc) has something called "Blending Modes", you can use this texture by modifying the blending mode to something that removes the black. Basically blending modes alter the textured layer by reacting with the different colours in the layer. 
Alternatively, if you don't have a program with blending modes, you could try different sorts of selections with the blacks to remove them.
