Description …and new things to discover!

What started out as a random sketch suddenly transformed into…well, him.

Everyone, please welcome "Professor" Zachary Anderson. And yes, he is ,unintentionally, a new character of mine.

He won't be anything close to a major character like Sierra, but he is someone that plays a small, but significant role in her life story.
Here's a bit of info on him:

A highly intelligent (though excitable) fellow, this fox has dedicated his life to research. The subject: Humans.
They fascinate him. As an encounter with one when he was just a cub, though frightening at first, only helped his curiosity and interest to blossom. He left his rural life for the city at the early age of 1, determined to learn more about humans, and their ways. Now 4 years old, he is a well-learned fox, and tends to speak in an educated manner. Through much struggle, trial and error, and just a bit of help, he has managed to teach himself how to read and write in english and spanish. But his ultimate dream is to learn how to communicate with a human, i.e., be the first fox to speak "their language". His fascination has gone so far as to the point of him beginning to imitate his subjects of interest, from walking upright (even running…sometimes) to participating in certain events, such as New Years Eve, and 4th of July, to name a few. His den is filled with books, paper, coins, watches, and many other human knick-knacks he found over the years, that were either forgotten about or lost in the streets.
His "Professor" title is self-given, due to his high levels of experience and knowledge in his research. It was an idea given to him while he was reading "Harry Potter" by J.K. Rowling-one of his favorite book series.

Yes, believe it or not, that is a very watered-down version of the original description of him from my sketchbook.
I'll probably write the full bio of him in his character sheet…if I ever get around to doing it, that is.

Ah well, I hope you like him!

Thank you! As much of a literature beast that Zachary is, he couldn't help but to read a few of Edgar Allen Poe's works of art….Plus, that poem just so happens to be one of my favorite pieces of literature.

Lol, for this guy, that would be a very possible scenario! He gets so excited about about the prospect of learning/doing something, that more often than not, he forgets things *like his notes*

Awww, it's great to see a fox character rushing off some place with books.  So, I take it your characters are ferals, and not anthros, but can still run up right like this... sort of half-anthro, or something.  I like the folds of the scarf and your overall structure for this character's body.  Quite appealing.

CatBeast17 In reply to foxstory [2014-04-15 17:07:57 +0000 UTC]

Sounds like me when I'm at the mall (although, I'm not a fox…) But thank you!
Yes, they do lean in that general direction. They can perform human-like actions (such as: running off with books ( ), drinking and eating tea and cake, drive a car, ect) while still staying in their natural, animal forms, as opposed to anthro…So yes, sort of like anthro, only without the human anatomy being involved in the characters themselves (because I still suck at drawing it >_> although, I AM practicing
The folds gave me a challenge, I won't deny that. Clothing is hard for me to draw in general, so for the scarf, I mostly just winged it and threw some wrinkles in where I thought they would go (this WAS intended to be a sketch only, but then I had to go and turn it into a picture…I was just too lazy to change anything
As for that pose…man. It was definitely a challenge. Since I had to apply animal anatomy to a human's for this, it took me a while to think of something that would be believable. I'm still a bit worried about it, but I'm very happy with this result Thank you for the kind words though, I'm very happy that you like him!

I'm late, I'm late for
A very important date.
No time to say hello, good-bye,
I'm late, I'm late, I'm late
I'm late and when I wave,
I lose the time I save.
My fuzzy ears and whiskers
Took me too mych time to shave.
I run and then I hop, hop, hop,
I wish that I could fly.
There's danger if I dare to
Stop and here's a reason why:
I'm over-due, I'm in a rabbit (fox in this case) stew.
Can't even say good-bye,
hello, I'm late, I'm late, I'm late.

Haha, sorry this drawing just made me think of Alice in Wonderland so  I just had to. XD

Alice in Wonderland IS a book that he has read before, so it totally applies!

So cute! I like his frazzled expression, with the crinkled whiskers and papers flying about.  And that he is running up right like his humans, I imagine the other foxes must find him a bit odd.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatBeast17 In reply to WooflesArt [2014-04-15 16:54:10 +0000 UTC]

Frazzled! That's a good word for him all right!
Oh, so you noticed the crinkled whiskers? I'm glad you did, because that's one of his "special" character traits (in fact, his whole appearance is one of being a little roughed up, due to the fact that his studies and research take up most of his time….leaving him with little time for a proper grooming An absent-minded professor, that one…)
Haha, you'd be right! He's excitable, has a tendency to talk to himself, never stays in one place for too long…and then there's his interest in humans All of this odd behavior means that very few animals like to stay in his company for long. He's a very busy fox, but he'd be lying to himself if he said he never gets lonely at times…
And thank you!

If I was a fox, I'd probably hang out with him a bit!  Curiosity is an excellent character trait--within reason, of course.  I hope his habits don't get him in trouble!

CatBeast17 In reply to WooflesArt [2014-05-05 04:55:09 +0000 UTC]

Well that would make him very happy indeed! (if not a bit nervous at first, since he wouldn't be used to having another animal willingly approach him ) A sudden thought: Have you seen/heard of the animated movie Epic? He would act A LOT like the scientist from that film!
And yes, lol, most definilty! "Curiosity killed the ca-er-fox."
Ho boy. He defiantly has had his fare share of trouble since he started up his strange research project. He's not a troublemaker by nature, but yes, his overwhelming curiosity and desire to learn have seen him on a hair-raising and heart-pounding chase through an apartment by humans (hey, he wanted to get up close and personal in his observation of a human residency!), to almost getting killed when he was discovered in a small open-door restaurant, and in the rush of a hurried escape, ran out right in front of a car! These are, but a few of the "adventures" of our dear Zachary….

WooflesArt In reply to CatBeast17 [2014-05-10 00:53:55 +0000 UTC]

I haven't seen the movie Epic, but I've seen previews for it.  If it is on Netflix or Redbox I'll have to watch it so I can get an idea of professor Zachary!  Lol, I'm imagining a wild fox chase though an apartment and lots of adrenaline!  (I can only imagine the reaction of humans when they see a fox running around on two legs!)  I hope he didn't get hit by that car that he ran in front of!  He's such a lovably awkward character.

Deceitful-Fox [2014-03-10 18:22:14 +0000 UTC]

Awesome picture! His pose makes me laugh, and that ridiculous scarf... Was this coloured with markers? I also have a 'Professor' fox character, although he's more interested in his own species. Who doesn't love an absent-minded academic, though?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

CatBeast17 In reply to Deceitful-Fox [2014-04-13 07:05:55 +0000 UTC]

Hey now. That scarf may be ridiculous (can't not agree with you there!), but it just so happens to be one of his most prized possessions. He never takes it off. Reminds me of a certain character's neckerchief….
Thank you though! It was a hard pose to pull off, and I still worry about the anatomy here, but I'm fairly pleased at how it turned out in the long run. And no, this is almost completely digital The only thing that isn't is the actual sketch of this guy, which I drew in plain old pencil
Oh yes, I know of whom you speak! The interaction between these two characters would be rather interesting, to say the least.
I had a teacher in high school who was the perfect living definition of an "absent-minded academic" (of whom partially inspired this character's personality) It didn't help the fact that he was a science teach too….

Deceitful-Fox In reply to CatBeast17 [2014-04-13 09:18:54 +0000 UTC]

It looks like he might trip on it if he runs on all fours... lol. Wow, I can't believe it's all digital; you're really improving in that area. I expect the interaction would be something like 'Where have you been all my life?!'

I think everybody takes inspiration from the people they know in real life for the personalities of their characters. Sometimes people are easier to understand if you imagine them as animals, lol.

Yep, I'm just getting so lazy I'm starting to color everything with Photoshop now…not something I think I should practice too often But that's nice of you to say, so thank you very much!

Oh man! The late-night talks between those two…I can't even imagine!

Ha, ain't that the truth. I take A LOT of inspiration from so much around me, it makes my head hurt sometimes. And I never would have thought of it that way, that's a cool point of view

I like the idea of a critter having a fascination in and studying humans... I wonder if there are any real animals who think this way; my cat seems to stare at me all confused whenever I draw

CatBeast17 In reply to SouthclawJK [2014-04-15 17:43:55 +0000 UTC]

Lol, well his overall personality IS based off an old high school teacher of mine, so that may be why!
You know, a lot of people have been saying that…I think I must have done well to create this guy! Even if he, originally, was never intended to be an actual character of mine
That is truly something curious to wonder about, isn't it? I've often though "I wonder what animals think of us? Of cars? Of buildings?" Ect. And lol, I have a cat also, and she does the same thing

It's funny how some animals are really used to human stuff and just adapted to the non-natural world!
I bet they are planning an uprising secretly somewhere...

CatBeast17 In reply to SouthclawJK [2014-04-27 00:18:59 +0000 UTC]

I truly believe that animals are more resilient and adaptive than many people think/realize. I just watched a very interesting PBS special on Youtube about Chernobyl, and how the absence of people is allowing for nature to "take back" the land www.youtube.com/watch?v=dK99dv… (in case you're interested ) Sure, radiation is present, and it most certainly isn't good for any living, breathing creature…but despite this, wolves, bison, eagles, falcons, and even fish appear to be thriving in a place that was considered inhabitable. Again, of course the radiation is still there, is is STILL going to affect the animals sooner or later…but the point still stands that nature is truly amazing in the way it adapts, heals, and revives itself under circumstances that we humans just sit there scratching our heads about. It's earned my deep respect, that's for sure…
Lol, the Underground Railroad (or something) for animals

Wolves in Chernobyl? YES watching that tomorrow thanks for that!

I can imagine the creatures there adapting to the radiation in some crazy way too, nature always finds a way
Maybe over a long time they will build a resistance to it like the cunning cockroach and when they rise up against humans our nuclear bio-weapons will be useless! xD
maybe somewhat over the top... but still, yes they are impressively adaptive. *casually becomes serious again*

Thank you very much! I kinda worried that he sounded too generic or "common" at first (as I'm sure I'm not the only person who's ever thought of an animal with in interest in researching humans), but I haven't gotten that vibe in the feedback for this, so I'm happy!

Thank you! I tried to add things that I thought would fit his character…from stuff he would find, and keep, on the streets, to literature and art he would have read, and looked at So much to discover, but so little time (ESPECIALLY since he's an animal) to rediscover it indeed!
Which is why he runs around like a chicken with it's head cut off most of the time
Oh, he's an oddball all right. But I love him already for that C:
Lol, if he could, he would just love to whip out his notebook and interrogate a few…
Thank you!
