Appearance
When you see this kid walking around, you probably won't think much of him. He's a typical young colt at a growing stage. Al is rather thin but not bony, and sports a rather colorful coat. The silver causes his seal bay coat to brighten up fiercely. And it seems that once heavy morning mist fell onto him and never let go. His mane and tail are usually straight cut, but his fluffy foal hair still makes it seem all ruffled up. Al's straight profile is adorned with a lopsided blaze, and two unusual bright green eyes. In most cases this colt wares a straight face. Emotions are rarely found here.
Personality
[Quiet] [Composed] [Observant] [Obedient] [Smart] [Suspicious]
Quiet
Algren is...more like a rock sometimes. He's very quiet, and rather answers in curt nods and shakes of his head. During conversations he'll most likely stare at the floor rather than your face and replies concisely. Only when really comfortable in the environment or with you will he speak more openly. Weather he's shy or simply trained down like this, no one knows.
Composed
It will be very, very hard to get this kid angry, or sad, or well...happy. Algren seems to wear one mask only; poker face. Whatever emotional turmoil is going on inside of him will most likely never surface. He doesn't speak of his feelings, and seems to wear a shield against the feelings of others. Insults or remarks slide off of him like oil and he just moves on. Algren is a down to earth colt, and lives the reality that is live without questions.Observant
Al is quiet, and with that he becomes observant. He's able to quietly watch the market place for hours, seeing one lady being pickpocket, rats stealing food behind the salesman's back and witness two Chevaliers agreeing to act as if those slaves over there, aren't illegal. Sometimes these observations and eavesdrops of conversations can be of great use to Algren's Master; Luciano, and he'll gradually tell them all.
Obedient
If there where prices for, not pit fighting, but obedience, Algren would have won at least one by now. Al is extremely devoted to Luciano and respects him greatly. He feels the need to return his master's favor and kindness, and eagerly follows him wherever he goes. Al feels close to Luciano, almost as if a son to him. Luciano treats Al like his son, but the colt is so trained down, that Al will still act more like a servant still. Algren knows his place well and won't dream of offending or disrespecting the high born community. Being told by Luciano of wrongdoings, devastates Al and he'll feel guilty for weeks.
Smart
Despite his young age and obedience, Al is far from stupid. He's able to tell lies from truths and carefully thinks his actions through. He won't easily be fooled and bribing him won't work. Al thinks realistically, there is no place for dreaming. Life is hard, but that's how it is. It has yet to happen that Al will question his master, though. But he surely has done so with others.
Suspicious
Living in such a crowded, big 'city', Algren is always on guard. He often watches the alleyways and looks behind his back in fear of being followed. Even though there are guards on every corner, and criminality isn't allowed, dark things happen in the shadows of such a big place, and Al knows this. His greatest fear is being stolen away from his master and put back onto the slave market once again.
History
Foal-hood
I was born to a loving couple. Two vagabonds. I don't remember much of my father, since, according to my mother, he was captured and taken to Aodh in my first week of live. But I do remember my mother well; Sasha. It had hurt her greatly to lose her mate, but she did her best to hide the pain and cared for me the best she could on her own. In my first few years I remember traveling to all kinds of places. We came across the Serora Herd often, I believe mom had family there, but I'm not sure. We also traveled into the caves of Breim once. It was kind of dark, I didn't really like it. Me and my mother traveled for 6 years together, until we too where caught by slave traders. I remember it well. It was evening, and mother and I just in search for a save sleeping spot near some overgrown ledges. Suddenly we were surrounded by these stallions. They rounded us up and forced us to join into this group of already caught travelers. We were chained all together and had to travel for miles with barely any food or water. I remember mother panicking severely when the city of Aodh came in sight, and she was beaten down by the traders until she was silent.
I heard her whisper apologies over and over. I don't know if that was to the traders, me or maybe the gods, but that's when I knew we were caught, for real.
I remember, that, the city walls loomed over us as we entered, it gave me chills. But the loud noise and chaotic crowds of the city were worse.
Teenager
I think mother and I were on the slave market for about... 4 years? It seemed an eternity. We traveled to many markets, but the most of those in Aodh. We were sold twice to different traders, always together. But our last slave trade master had trouble selling us. He wanted to sell the both of us as a pair, as servile slaves. I suppose it can be considered a kind act that he put such effort in keeping us together. But when there was no interest still, he separated us. On the very next market he'd put us up for sale, separately, and mother was sold almost immediately... as laborer.
It hurt much to see her go, but I could keep contact with her, through the connections within the city. Here and there slaves spoke to one another, and sometimes I could gain news about her.
I think I lasted for about another year on the market before I was bought, by Luciano. I don't know what he saw in me, but he took me in his home, and had me fed and bathed. I was wary of him at first, wary of it all really. I had been told what to do by the slave traders. They had trained me in how to be a good servant, but it was such a strange experience to wake up on the filthy streets, and go to sleep on a soft bed. I quickly understood that Luciano treated me like more then a slave. I still don't quite understand why...
A couple weeks after I started my service to Luciano, I had received news through the slave's connections that my mother had died under the rubble of a collapsed building. I'll never forget the fact that at that moment, I couldn't bring myself to grief, and simply continued on with my day, as if nothing happened.
I was 11 when I was taken into service by master Luciano, and I serve him still. I once, as a young colt, wanted to become a merchant and sell goods to the vagabonds and great herds. But that was but a dream. I won't want to trade the live I have now for anything. Master Luciano is good to me, and I will stay by his side for as long as I can.
I got caught in the massive attack on the crucible by the vindicators at age 14. I was luckily to survive were others didn't. I only received some minor injuries, barely lasting any scars. I was saved by Lady Lillith and her companions. I tried to flee with them, but we were attacked by vindicators. Lady Bentley got taken hostage, and Lord Taavetti got severely injured, trying to save my life... By that point, I don't know what came over me, but I attacked a vindicator, in a attempt to help the pit slave Ceal, to finish them off. We succeeded, and I thank which ever god blessed them, as both the young Lord and Lady survived.
Me and Illidis were send to Breim to attend the 'peace ceremony'. I'll never understand why... It nearly costs us our lives, as the pygmy dragons that were ment as a gift for High Lord Hajime went rampant. We grouped up with other equines that tried to flee the scene, and managed to make our way to safety. Illidis, along with others, was badly injured though... Me and him both won't be taking anymore trips for the time being...
I received my brand. Like all slaves in Valore. I was taken without questions or answers by the city's chevaliers. And without my masters knowledge, I was marked. It will take time to heal...
While I was held for the branding, something must have happened to lord Luciano and Illidis. I have not seen master Luciano since that day and I haven't had a chance to talk to Illidis either. I hope he's doing alright. With Master Luciano gone, it seems, I was placed back into the slave market.
I thought I stay there for sure, or be forced to become a city servant. But to my surprise this young stallion, Master Leonides came along. He claimed to recognize me, and without hesitation purchased me. I now find myself servant to master Leonides, and am mostly set to work to clean his café. I seem to have been lucky once again with my master, as this stallion proves to be kind.
