It's never cool when people act like that! People should be able to enjoy the music they like no matter what they are. It's just like the whole ridiculous idea of the color pink being for only girls.
Music is for EVERYBODY to enjoy, no matter what genre it may be!

I'm a white guy and I have more black female singers on my MP3 playlist than white male singers. (My favorite singer, Leona Lewis, is biracial - her dad's black and her mom's white.) I like some rock, but I prefer alternative and soft rock. I don't like hard rock and I can't stand metal.

Why should race matter? I don't get it. This stamp seems pointless to me. You don't see me saying, "I'm white and listen to Bob Marley!" because it shouldn't matter.

I agree, my dad says he's "proud" of me going through this "rock and roll stage", but he been giving me this "look" as if I'm on drugs when saw me listeing to Virus of Life by Slipknot, and the same "white music" shit happen to me when my third college roomate(which is still debatable on wheather or not she a good roomate or an ever fatning, over dramtic brat) has the nerve to said that, and in the back of my head I'm like "really, your gonna that", and I have yet to hear one one, metal, or Alt. song from her Iphone, that isn't that I'm so hood, my boo this my boo that, or any of that CRAP that everyone calls rap and hip hop nowdays.

why is this a surprise, black people invented rock music......

Kell-o In reply to GardenofFallenStars [2011-03-09 22:36:45 +0000 UTC]
True...but if the singer isn't black, people would still ask a black person "why are you listening to that?" and it is not the other way around for white people, no one ever ask why they listen to a song by a black person. The only time a notice people not asking black people that question is if someone everyone knows like the Beatles, etc. People go on stereotypes a lot, people at my school expect the Latinos/Hispanic people to listen to some sort of Spanish music, and the Asians some sort of Asian music, and black people anything by a black person... just flat out stereotypes.

I agree, stereotypes suck and usually people who go on them are usually the most ignorant and close minded people alive.

A lot of idiots are compairing certain things, like music genres for example, to people's race. It is really stupid, AND it is really pissing me off! Music all all kinds are for any race, not just one. Same goes for dancing, singing, and all the other wonderful shit people compare races to.

You have a good point, I happen to be half black and I do listen to rock, but I'm also open to most other music genres and I hate the fact that people stereotype a race when it comes to music, its just pure ignorance to do that.

Thank you for making this stamp! I'm black and I listen to heavy metal and other black people think I'm crazy. They even still call it rock n roll music. It just pisses me of when they tell me I need to listen to rap and turn off my rock music. It's amazing how cruel your own kind can be isn't it? And rap died a loooong time ago,lol

I can't stand that people always have to put a label on everything, including music.
I listen to just about everything but country. But I can't stand that I have people getting mad at me for likeing a vareity of music including old music, not just newer stuff. Apparently, being a caucasian woman means I have to like Brittany Spears or whatever.

that 's good that you listen to what you like .you should never be pressured into listening to something because you're suspose to . these 's are stupid rules that some people in our society make up and unfortunately many people comply to them out of peer pressure .

I'm black too, but I listen to more rock music and old school hip-hop than rap. Today's rap doesn't make since anymore. There's only a few actual good rappers out there.

Honestly, you make a good point. a person (anybody, really. let's be realistic, it's not just white people.) sees a black person listening to rock these days and they go "hm, that's weird." I don't see it as racism so much as I see it as a person criticizing another person's tastes. These days, a white person listening to rap is pretty normal, but a black person listening to rock is strange to people. I think this is because society has become so used to relating rap and black people that people have become to shallow to accept anything else, and thus they fear what they don't understand.
But I don't, however, believe this is racism. Simply put, it is a difference of tastes, and the other person criticizing forementioned tastes is not necessarily a racist, but simply not used to seeing that, and therefore may not understand it, or understand why you've chosen rock over rap! I think it has a lot more to do with people being close-minded than racist. Although, in some cases, it could be racism. Just... Not always, like you seem to say. Aghem. :3
I respect you for making this stamp, though. It's a bold statement, and most of what you point out in the artist's comments (despite being somewhat defensive) part is definitely true. There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to black people and what they listen to, and not only that, but their way of life. It takes guts to put yourself out there like this.
It's late, so pardon if that doesn't make much sense.
Mexican here, btw, and I listen to all kinds of music. Primarily rock, some rap, LOTS of classical (Chopin, Beethoven, and Mozart are some of my faves), and a good lot of alternative and easy listening. n_n Simply different tastes, and I don't hold it against people if they choose not to listen to the same things, or criticize what I listen to. They have their opinions, and I have mine.

The best solution is to just stop listening to crappy American music (Try Japanese rock or South Korean Tech-Hop). Becides, rock was a black invention. & can you imagine how much worse American music would be today if rock hadn't come along?
