Every time when I'm watching PotO with my mom we're arguing about why Raoul is crying in that scene. I share Erik's opinion and my mom is with Christine.
So I thought it would be funny, if his reasons were so different than what everyone suspect.

I love that scene in the movie. The look of utter disgust on Raoul's face was top notch. Poor guy. Nearly get hung for coming after him. Unlike some, I like Raoul's character and his question to the Phantom in the Final Lair scene is one of my favorite lines in the whole thing, stage or screen.
