Description This was done for ArtOrder's Eowyn and the Nazgul challenge. The prompt was pretty simple. Take the scene from the book, and make an image of it. There were more triumphant moments in the story, but I wanted to give Merry his due credit. Most of this part of the story is told from Merry's point of view, and there was one part of it that really stood out to me:

"Pity filled his heart and great wonder, and suddenly the slow-kindled courage of his race awoke. He clenched his hand. She should not die, so fair, so desperate! At least she should not die alone, unaided."

It was a challenge to try and convey that, and I didn't really succeed as much as I would have liked. But I learned a lot while working on this. I read the other day in Richard Schmid's "Alla Prima" (the most helpful book for painting, traditional AND digital, that you will ever find) that you should never leave anything on a painting unless you are completely happy with it. Which means if you hate a pose or a character, you have to just bite the bullet and redraw it.

I copied a former classmate and now have a little note on my computer now that says, "Just fucking redraw it." That is the best advice I can give with my limited experience. If the drawing isn't right, the painting can't be right. Draw, draw, draw. "A really shiny piece of shit is still a piece of shit." I went through five Merry's, four Eowyn's, and three backgrounds before I settled on these. I don't consider the time I spent on those wasted anymore, because the end product is something that I am proud of.

Even if I didn't really capture what I was going for.

Reminds me of the 'painterly' style of old Tolkien illustrators - Nashmith, Howe, Lee - without that too smooth look that betrays most digital paintings. Also, the general atmosphere has some of Tolkien's epic lyricism in it - Thanks for not making a chainmail-bikini Eowyn, I got sick of that Marvel comics look -.
Overall, a very nice painting. I like it very much

Somehow the invisible headed NazgΓ»l with a floating crown is actually more terrifying than the movie version. Well, this is actually how it should be.

''suddenly the slow-kindled courage of his race awoke''
You can see it in Merry's face. Like suddenly, a different character emerged. A courageous one.
That face really captures determination.

While this painting is really excellent, I have to say that I added as a fav more for the message in your comments than anything. I usually give up on the first doodle and feel that if I don't draw it perfectly the FIRST TIME then I failed, and that's just stupid. I like knowing how much effort went into something rather than just seeing the end result, it makes me feel inadequate. (which is also kind of stupid on my part). To know that an artist of this talent also struggled with making it right, makes me feel better as a whole. I understand that judging myself against others is a pointless endeavor, but that does not prevent me from doing so. It's instilled in us all to judge ourselves against another. The sooner people realize that, the better.

Just knowing that you didn't just make this magically appear, that you went through the efforts of drawing and redrawing, makes me want to do the same. To actually try to improve my work, instead of just giving up because it's not as good as this other person.

So thank you for that.

Again, the work is amazing, I just wanted to comment on the comment, so to speak.

Pretty sure if I saw anyone looking at me that way I'd run for the hills.

This is beautiful. I think you did a great job capturing the scene.

And I personally think that none of us can ever quite put to paper (drawing or writing) what we have in our heads. Something always gets filtered out, it seems.

Ahh, one of my favourite parts of this book. Awesome. This is a lovely piece, but I have to say, what really grabbed my attention is what you wrote about it.

I love reading Artists' comments. I'd rather see a mediocre piece of art where the artist detailed the work they've done, the lessons they've learned, the inspiration they had, than a technically perfect piece with nothing written about it.

To make it even less about your art, this is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been struggling with exactly what you're talking about for ages... covering up mistakes with fancy soft colour or something. So for that, thank you. I have to get over the "shiny piece of shit" stage.
