You could always look for GIMP, that is a free art programme with layer-options and smudge tools. Personally I never understood it, but a lot of people I know love it XP. And it's free!

Like said: I can't work with it, but many people I saw can. Plus it has layers options. It's not that great for dolls (no worries; hair is on the to do list!), but for other drawings...

You'll learn! And you'll learn to love layers! It's like an animation cel; one layer with the background, one with the character... or even more split up (hair, eyes, clothes...) and voila; moving around things is made easier

The colors coordinate pretty well, and you even put highlights. If possible, work on some shadowing to bring her out, or even better, add some coloring to the background. White is plain. Do something random. =O

Yeah, someone else just mentioned about shading...if that's what you meant by shadowing, and it didn't come out the way I wanted.
