If you say so. Joking aside, I really like how he looks that it actually helped me figure out how I'd like something to look.

Ah, that's what I like to hear!  What are you working on?

I have a dark, god-like creature in mind that isn't gigantic but small and cute. What I wanted it to at least be mostly black/dark with red parts like the claws, eyes and mouth being red. What you drew is almost so perfect that it's hard for me to unsee him like that.

To keep it short, he used to be evil but got bored of it so instead makes protagonist do challenges for him to entertain him and helps them in return. He transforms to hide his true form but loves seeing the reaction of others when showing his true form.

Haha, you took him in the opposite direction of where I'd go with him.  He's a early level RPG monster that can't get ahead in life and dreams of evolving someday and becoming a dungeon boss, but he's clearly not that type of monster.  He gets picked on by level grinders.

Despite all that, I'd imagine his personality is pretty close to your character lol

If you want to develop your character, try doing quick variations on my guy's  design.  Do different body types, shape languages, horns, tail, eyes, fur, markings, colors, and so on.  Variation and experimentation is the key to good character design.  You're pretty much guaranteed to come up with something you like that's totally yours!

Here are some examples:

Don't be afraid to try something totally out of left field.  Sometimes you'll discover something that you never would have thought of otherwise.  Make quick notes on what you like and what you dislike, and keep mixing and matching until you find something you like!

Ah, also a game character. Sucks for him, he probably tries to be intimidating but fails at it and gets defeated in 1 attack.

His personality would be over the top, you know that type, the type that you love to hear because of the way they talk.

Alright, I do need to develop that mentality though. I barely draw so the simplest of sketches take me forever and my lack of patience doesn't help with that. I'll try though when I'm in the mood to draw.

If you don't feel like drawing with a pencil, there are other things you can try.  For example, get a light colored marker and block out some basic shapes for your character.  Then, start layering on more details with increasingly dark markers.  I do that sometimes cause it's rough and fast.  Remember, no one has to see these developmental drawings, so you don't have to put much effort or polish.  Nobody has to know ; )

There is a trap that concept artists often fall into however.  Infinitely experimenting.  You can endlessly make variations on a character, but eventually you have to settle on something.  At some point, pick the designs you like and polish them up a tad bit.  Then, line em up, take your pick, and congratulations!  You still have to figure out the colors!  Art software is really handy for that step.

Well, good luck!

Yeah, true. I haven't drawn on paper because of personal reasons so I do it on PAA. What I've done is take specific parts and draw variations of it (different eyes, ears, tails. Not more for now due to time) and later I'll try different combinations with the parts I like and see what meshes well together.

Don't worry about that, I can only fit so much in 1 PAA file so I'll have to get rid of things that are definitely a NO to make room for more things if I think of more ideas.

Thanks.
