One of Spidermans greatest foes and also one the most iconic (A personal favourite of mine =3)
The symbiote was a creature that came down on the shuttle from a space expedition which in various story arcs interacts with spiderman and trys to bond with him. The creature little more then a pile of smart oil, has the ability (as is its nature) to assimilate, merging with a host and then eventually taking them over, thus when the chance encounter with our hero was a very forunate one.
The creature began to enhance Spiderman's powers his strength, speed, agility. Whilst at the same time starting to alter his personality; making Peter aggressive, selfish and even hostile towards even his closest friends/family and allies.
This gave rise to Peter disguarding the symbiote and although he returned to normal a greater evil was born. As the other main part of the venom saga is the interaction with Eddie Brock. The alien already embittered at its rejection found a new host in Eddie; after losing his job and seeming whole life due to his failing reporting/photography at the 'Bugle. Eddie Brock seemed to bring his downfall about on his own, the continual failure to expose spiderman, the lies and his own incompitence (Usually brought about by the webhead) cause eddie such grief and rage that he embraced the symbiote with open arms.
The combined emotions from the two created the aptly named 'Venom' (His personally given name after their mutual hate for Spiderman). Venoms has all of spidermans powers but stronger, they symbiote enhanced brock gained these from spiderman himself and two other huge advantages; an immunity to Peter's spider sense (the sixth like sense that helps spiderman pick up hidden and sudden danger) meaning he can never tell when venom might appear and..... Peters secret identity! All the knowledge of Peter or at least his memories and knowledge of the time spent with the symbiote also became accessible to Venom a threat that always haunts our hero.
Despite this terrible enemy Spiderman still manages too defeat his foe, usually with his wits and with the 2 weaknesses the symbiote has and that is exposure to extreme heat and soundwaves. (The way Peter usually defeats the symbiote trying to enslave him is depicted as a final confrontation in a clock tower of a large church where the vibrations of the struck bells in the tower, wound the creature so that it loses its hold)
Venom constantly represents the darker side to our hero, the rage at the ones who have wronged them and the willingness to do anything with their powers regardless of the costs, an antagonist of truly terrible proportions, who has no desires except to make spiderman suffer and pay
