Think I recall that they're one of the most successful hunters in Africa. I'm wondering how many of those hunts are taken over by lions and hyenas.

Like a lot of threatened/endangered species, they seem to have a fairly strong presence in zoos and similar locations. Something that is depressing in its own way, but reduces their chances of final extinction. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like the habitat loss that is one of the largest threats to them will end. And the reserves/parks/preserves can actually be part of the problem, since wild dogs generally lose when competing with lions and hyenas.
