As we entered the arena I shook my hands to prevent them from freezing on me. Today was a breezy day, making the already cold day even worse. “Let’s just get this over with,” I whispered to Hades.

When I gathered my reins Hades became tense, he knew what was gonna happen next. We never got much time to practice barrel racing, but he acted like he has been doing this for years. I lined the stallion up the best I could for the first barrel before allowing him to bolt off.

Hades’ gallop was not the most pleasant thing to sit, a strong and powerful gallop that could knock the wind out of you. His turn around the first barrel was sharp but had a hard time coming out of hit, something we clearly need to work on.

Second and third barrels were sharper than first, he was a quick mover, swiftly darting around the barrels as if he was doing simple roll backs. His run home wasn’t perfect. It felt like I was riding a short strided pony but this is because he’s so used to having to animate his gaits, hopefully I can knock that out of them when it comes to barrel racing.

But after the run I couldn’t help but smile as I knew he was the one.
