"faire sans dire" was main motto of Thomas Sopwith witch even added this quote to his coat of arms. And his life proved that he was obey to this true. Started as balloon constructor but soon started to be interesting of aviation. First flying boat he constructed before 1914. Soon set up his company ( Sopwith Aviation Company ) and started to producing aircrafts. The company produced more than 18,000 World War I aircraft for the allied forces. The most famous were Sopwith: Pup, Triplane and Camel.
Sopwith Pup was first really "classic" British fighter because it was single seater, non pusher, and have synchronized gun.
The Pup was highly regarded, it was pleasant to fly and was simple and reliable, perhaps the perfect flying machine. Its large wings gave it a good rate of climb and agility, especially at altitude up to 15000ft. It was underpowered compared to the German Albatros D.III but could turn twice in the space of a single turn by an Albatros.

Name Pup was never accepted by headquarters. Officially fighter was called Sopwith Scout ..but nobody was using this name.. All pilots where calling it Pup. When Gen. Brancker noticed fighter first time, when it was standing near bigger observation plane Sopwith 1½ Strutter, he cried out, "Oh God! Your Strutter has a puppy!" New fighter was indeed very similar to Strutter but much more smaller.
Airplane on picture is B5253 from training unit No 3 TDS Lopcombe Corner. October 1918. As most training planes it was unarmed.
