Beautiful. American geography is not my strong point but wherever this may be it looks quite special.

This is from the South Dakota Badlands due east of Rapid City. The colors present in the soil can be quite spectacular depending on time of day, lighting levels, and moisture content.

Thank you!...

What an unfortunate location name (Badlands) for such a wonderful place!

The Badlands in South Dakota.

I've always been fascinated with pictures I've seen from there. I really should go.

There's a lot to see in and around the area in addition to the Badlands.

Oh? Like what? I really don't know anything about the Dakotas.

Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Sturgis, Deadwood, Rapid City (the City of Presidents), Hot Springs, Custer Park, Needles Highway. I'd also recommend a drive up and around Bear Butte (seen in previous deviation submissionΒ  )

It is like a geological slice

It is a most beautiful area, albeit very rugged. The soil, layers, erosion over the eons of time have created a wonderful landscape. The Badlands are not unique in the geology they present, but have a timeless tie to the days of the old west, the Native American's, and the spirit with which people all persevere in the face of challenged survival. What it must have been like then, is most likely what it is like now. Thank you very much, Lawrence!...
