Description Cloud Forge City

This is the new look that I came up with for the capitol city of the Eurovean Empire: Cloud Forge City. I made it with the help of my good friend *Critical-Altitude , who was a major help for me in sorting out the dimensions and size comparisons needed for the design to be a little more accurate.

I included the sizes in the picture, but I'll go into a little more detail here in the comments. Keep in mind that the Eurovean Empire uses the standard metric system:

From Mast to Tail Fin, Cloud Forge City is twenty kilometers long (roughly the size of Manhattan ) and about five kilometers wide from one end of the ship to the other. From the bottom of the tail to the highest building, Cloud Forge is roughly four kilometers tall.

Cloud Forge City was once a small floating isle all on it's own, but even now, being completely encased in metal and converted into the largest air ship ever, it still retains it's stone and dirt core. As such, the city floats all on it's own. Machines are simply needed to propel and steer. There is a rim around the outside of the city twenty stories high and half a kilometer across that keeps high winds from agitating the city.
The vast majority of Cloud Forge City's citizens are either human. Over 57% of the population is purely human and tend to be either citizens from Emperor Gymultimar’s original kingdom or native citizens of the city from before it was Cloud Forge. About 25% of the people are demon or half demon and former citizens of Empress Ra Shedmalka's old kingdom. Nearly 16% of the citizens are the Odd races, the assorted non-human races that were conquered by the Emperor's army. Most of the odd races work as house maids and live-in servants to the rich, privileged folk. The rest tend to live in poverty in the under city. Finally, about 2% of the population is humanoid, typically the result of a successful breeding between a human and non-human race. Humanoids tend to look mostly human except for the odd trait or two that give them away. The humanoids tend to live in whatever caste of the city they were born into, though some tend to get cast out of their families for bringing them shame.

The surface of Cloud Forge is one big dense city with massive skyscrapers, but there are open parks on the surface where earth, grass, trees, natural lakes and rocks can be observed. The surface of the city houses only the highest of nobles and and richest of businessmen. Beautiful architecture, quality art, fine music, and the most advanced technologies of the Eurovian Empire define this landscape. The citizens here enjoy comfortable fast-paced lifestyles and the highest standard of living.

The under city is even larger and supports an even bigger population. Large caverns carved out of rock and rich masonry buildings are common sights here. About 85% of the city's population lives underground with some fairly strict rules about traveling to the surface. This is the working class. Most spend their whole lives there. The vast majority (around 65%) of the under city citizens are raised to build, maintain, repair, and operate the machines needed to steer this massive ship. They work hard and most manage to live a decent middle class lifestyle.

Cloud Forge City has a strong military presence as well, due mainly to it's dual use as a fortified military vessel. The mast of the city along with the dragon head it the home of Cloud Forge's military base, complete with landing strips for airships. In fact, the police forge on Cloud Forge is just another branch of the military. Everywhere are statues, posters, and monuments commending Emperor Gymultimar.

On the underside of the ship is a two kilometers tall and wide docking bay nicknamed "The Mouth" where hundreds of war ships are ready to deploy at a moment's notice. Cloud Forge City is actually littered with military docking ports, but only the mouth has a direct vein to the military base at the front. With no wars currently keeping the military busy, the mouth's primary function has become the main port for the under city's food and supplies.

Thanks. I had a little help in the conception stage, but the design was pretty much all me.

That's awesome.
And huge!
I may not have mentioned this, but I love things that are of a mind-blowing size. They blow my mind.

Which can only be described by one word.
Awesome.

Or possibly "Freakin' sweet." But that catchphrase is apparently owned by Seth MacFarlane.

That's a messy question, but it basically lasts as long Disney has the money to keep lobbying congress to extend the copyright laws.

Still has that great blend of fantasy, clockwork, science fiction. This is the kind of place that looks cool both far away and up close, in it's streets. It'll be a blast introducing the city in comic form.

Unfortunately we won't be getting there in the first issue.
But that IS where Mia will be heading and where Kennedy will have to follow.

I see no harm in that.
If you do, though, you might want to make a profile for each of them and not just a group shot.

LovgrenO [2011-04-25 07:18:04 +0000 UTC]

Definitely a improvement of the original concept. But how about making the chimneys exta high so the smoke and steam won't bother the upper classes?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Bug-Off In reply to LovgrenO [2011-04-25 15:46:56 +0000 UTC]

I'd say the smoke stacks are higher. It's just that from this distance, you can't really see them.

This looks amazsing Bugg, you've really out done yourself with this design. The smaller city scape really adds a great sense od scale to the peice and seems to have fixed the problem your were having with conveying the scale of the city. Aditionally lengthening the design has given it a much less overcrowded feel.

Also bud, the idea of having the core of the city as a a floating island, finally solves the big question of how the managed to keep something of that size flying in the first place. This project is really building up to be something great amigo.

Bug-Off In reply to DrunkenOracle [2011-04-25 15:45:15 +0000 UTC]

As I said, I had a little help wrapping my head around the scale of the city. Once I better understood the concept of the dimensions, everything fell into place a lot easier.

And yeah, I touched upon the origins of Cloud Forge City in an early blog entry here: [link]
Cloud Forge being a floating island seemed like both a simple solution and a poetic on too. Even if all the steering and propulsion systems failed, the city would still just hang in the air.
