LOL, I recognise the flickr ref you used - I started to draw it ages ago but I got bogged down in other stuff and never returned to it. It's actually quite difficult to draw because the tonal values are very similar in the photo and that makes it weird looking once you transfer that to a drawn piece. You really captured the shape and that lovely mane though. Very nice work!

Of course, Rock n' Racehorse's photo's are all reconizable (she's a great photographer :3) and so much fun to draw. I'm actually rather dissapointed how this turned out now that I look back on it. There's no value contrast in it at all and is overall very flat (besides a bit in the mane).

Funny though, the actual horse in the original photograph is an Andalusian, not a Friesian (I was fooled).

the same was happening to mine. I tried desaturating the photo, upping the contrast/brightness and altering the curves so I could reference from it better but it didn't seem to make much difference. I think it's one case where you need to use your head and add some more light and shadow, but I'm not good at that! Hence giving up XD I will go back to it at some point though, I just love the photo.

Yes I remember now that the horse is an andy, but he does look really friesianlike!

You kill me! Your anatomy is great, you're wonderful at getting the wispyness and flowyness of manes and tails and forelocks, and your attention to detail is fantastic! I would start adding more values to your shading (forgive me if a critique is unwanted...please realize this is because I've fallen in love with your work, and believe you're amazingly talented). Add lots of darks and lights! Don't be afraid to be dramatic!

No, critques are greatly appreciated! ^^
I know I should really add more value, but I'm such a chicken when it comes to shading! I'm scared I'm going to sqrew it up!

I totally understand! It took me a while to get used to using more extreme values, but it really pays off and gives more depth. Imagine what all of your drawings would look like if you put forth the effort to REALLY make them pop! Maybe print out some of your drawings, and shade over them, just experiment to see what you can do? Trust me, from what I've seen of your stuff, you won't screw it up

I'll have to try sooner or later.
I just don't have the patience either! That's why I could never do art as a profession because I'm such a procrastinist (sp?).

Thanks for the comment! ^^

Hehe. I totally understand about patience. Which is why I don't do backgrounds...and if I do, they turn out really bad. And also why I can't do really close detail...and why I rush over large areas like stomach and hindquarters.
